SME by default allows for 3 main unit logins  /dev/tty1 /dev/tty2 /dev/tty3.  My user wants 8 logins. How can i add that?

you should explain the problem, not your customer's solution ;-)

Why would you want more VT's ? Just use putty to open as many as the SME Server allows.

Or screen, which allows multiple sessions within one CLI session which you can later re-attach to. Handy for running long tedious jobs or for training purposes when someone is on the location and wants to see what you are doing from remote.

Should have said that SME server by default  key combination's (ALT F1), (ALT F2), (ALT F3) opening up screens 1, 2, and 3.

Need to add key combination's (ALT F4), (ALT F5), (ALT F6), (ALT F7), and (ALT F8) to open up screens 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.
I need some good coaching as i am a novice.

Thank you

Oldtony, please explain why you need so many consoles. You already stated you are a novice and maybe we can advice you to take a different route or solution that is easier and less invasive than your current request.

Please answer our question why you need them instead of stating you just need them. We are curious to know why.

thanks for the interest
the user has practices that use the eight screens. The user pops from (ALT F1) to (ALT F2...8) in their routine. The user does not want to change practices? That is why i need to activate (ALT F4...F8).

Regarding "Why would you want more VT's ? Just use putty to open as many as the SME Server allows." -> i don't know what VT's mean.  Also don't know what putty is.   man putty returns no manual entry.

regarding "More on screen: http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html" i don't get how to use this to emulate (ALT f2..8).

Thanks for the help.  If you can give this old dummy some coaching it sure would be appreciated.

The user pops from (ALT F1) to (ALT F2...8) in their routine.
We understand that.

The user does not want to change practices?
Really? I hope you are not asking that to us. :-D If the user really wants to stick to his routines that hard I think you should not use SME Server. Why does your user need so many terminals on a server? What is s/he trying to aim for?

Regarding "Why would you want more VT's ?
The thing you are after: virtual terminals.

Just use putty to open as many as the SME Server allows." -> i don't know what VT's mean.  Also don't know what putty is.   man putty returns no manual entry.
I guess you might have heard of google? :-D

It is a program to access the terminal of the server from remote PCs, you can start as many as you like, even more than the required 8 in your situation.

regarding "More on screen: http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html" i don't get how to use this to emulate (ALT f2..8).
You can create multiple terminals by starting screen and after that pressing Ctrl+A, followed by Ctrl+C, of you do this repeatedly you create more terminals. You can give them a name to remember more easily which each one is about. You can than loop through them using a variety of commands including switching to previous/next screen, a specific screen on the stack of created screens etc.

Thanks for the help.  If you can give this old dummy some coaching it sure would be appreciated.
The best coaching I can give from here for now is to read what we provided, try them and if you get into troubles return to the forums and ask specific questions of where you fail. It is of no use to re-iterate the whole manual or source of information that we already provided.
