SME RESCUE and USB DISK
« on: July 30, 2010, 02:05:05 PM »
Dear all

From the day 27th of May, my server v7.4 does not start.
The installed version of the SERVER SME is (2.6.9-89.0.25. EL).
During the boot, the server stop in:

SHUTDOWN SYSTEM LOGGER

in Portuguese (installed) it is:

A PARAR AS MENSAGENS DO SISTEMA

I tried already the upgrade effectuated for the version 7.5 and subsequently for the version 7.5.1, but without success, always stopping with the next information:
"THE POST UPGRADE SCRIPT IS RUNNING..."

I already reported this bug.

To try to exceed this, I effectuated the boot with the CD and sellected SME RESCUE, with success. Then, I mount the image using the command CHROOT /MNT/SYSIMAGE with success. Using the MC and going to i-bays i can see my files. Now my question is: i have a 40gb usb disk fat32 attached but i can't see. What command i must use to mount the USB DISK and copy my files.

Can you help me, please?

Kind Regards

Eduardo Antunes

SME doesn't support FAT32 filesystem
you have to use EXT3.

Dear eduantunes:

May be you need to use some other linux live CD to start the system.

I will use ubuntu desktop live cd.

You can select the try ubuntu on the first menu(Make sure don't install, it will erase all you data)

after you start the system with ubuntu desktop. You cannot access the data on smeserver due to smeserver use software raid & lvm2.

You need to start synaptic package manager via System & Administration (on top of the menubar)to install mdadm & lvm2.(This install just in the memory not affect your harddisk)

After you start Synaptic Package Manager

type "lvm" into Quick search.

select package lvm2 , libdevmapper-event1.02.1 & libdevmapper-dev & "Mark for Installation"

type "mdadm" into Quick search again

select package mdadm & choose "Mark for Installation"

Then , choose Apply in the menubar.

It will connect to internet to download & install the 4 package into memory.

After finished. You can close the Synaptic Package Manager

Click Places on the top menubar.

You can mount your sme system.(if you cannot find them , you can start the gparted will show all your harddisks & partitions)
You can use command in terminal to mount the partition you need.

Now , you can plug in your usb harddisk. ubuntu will auto mount it normally.

Then you can copy the files

If you want to use a GUI to access you sme files , DON'T use the default file manager. It don't have admin right. May be will lost some files when you copy due to no access right.

You can start the file manager with a command "sudo nautilus" without the quots & in the terminal.

It will start a root access file browser. You can copy all your files you need.

This method that I am using to recover files in smeserver but I know it is not the best method due to a lot of procedures.

Good Luck!

God bless you!

David Yip

Indeed. I think he will find it simpler to just reformat the drive ext3, and use 'sme rescue'.

I already reported this bug.

What is the bug number.
It seems to me it would be better to resolve the problem rather than doing a rebuild.

See this Howto for info re mounting and formatting that disk to ext3.

(edit - added link forgotten in first post)

I agree with Charlie, the approach you are currently using (ie sme rescue) is better and easier than the other method mentioned here. Just format that USB disk to ext3, mount it and it will be usable.

I still think you should resolve your original problem though.
What is the outcome of the bug report ?

What is the outcome of the bug report ?

There is no outcome yet, just unsolved mysteries.

http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6148

I think it reasonable for eduantunes to try to backup files, as well as to try to solve the problem. That's what I'd recommend, as would you I suspect.

Oh yes of course.
The Golden Rule.
Backup your data while you still can !
Once your data is safe, proceed to problem resolution.

Good evening everyone

I am positively impressed and grateful for all the answers here has given me in order to help me on my main problem, recover files that have the i-bays.

I will start to format the USB Disk and then to copy the data.

Any information that has prompted me to better explain and understand this error will continue to give, to improve the SME SERVER.

Kind Regards

Search on
sme rescue
or
rescue
also on
mount

for various examples. Here are two that may assist.

Thank You

Identifying your USB drive
After connecting your USB drive, execute the command

mount

and look for anything mounted in /media/???.     ---> None.
If your drive did not auto-mount, search /var/log/messages for the kernel commands related to your device using:

egrep "(kernel|fstab|scsi).*(usb|USB)" /var/log/messages        --> the system hangs, only CTRL+ALT+DEL

You should have a line logged by fstab-sync giving the auto-mount folder created and the device name for your new device that looks like this:

Sep 23 17:11:14 office fstab-sync[32193]: added mount point /media/usbdisk1 for /dev/sdd1

You should now be able to mount your USB drive using the values found in /var/log/messages. In our example, that would mean:

mount /media/usbdisk1

When I try to do this, in SME Rescue and then mounting the image, I can not do.
I only see the CD-ROM and Floppy.
With MC and making the viewing [F3] of /var/log/messages the system hangs

Solutions?Rename this file and then when the server boot, writes a new file in another area disk?

Kind Regards

Eduardo Antunes

Have you ran a test on your hard drive, maybe some parts of your drive are not readable ?
Download UBCD (search google) and run your brand of drive diagnostic software or alternatively run smartctl, see
http://wiki.contribs.org/Monitor_Disk_Health

If you cannot use a USB disk, then try using a normal SATA drive see
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,40074.msg218421.html#msg218421
