I need to set up the e-smith gateway in such a way that I can still maintain
my email accounts at my ISP, Videotron. The documentation seems to
only describe the setup to run my own mail services.

How would I do this?

Thanks

you should be able to connect to your "ISP" e-mail accounts as usual from the systems inside your lan.

Thanks for the quick response.

Since my internet connection parameters are dynamically assigned by Videotron,
would I then choose "Use DHCP without dynamic DNS service" when configuring
the server and gateway dedicated access mode.

Since I won't be setting up a web or a mail server (i.e just using e-smith as
a gateway/firewall to provide share/secure access to the internet
for family members) do I need to:

1. setup user accounts for family members,
2. configure domain settings,
3. maintain the LDAP directory
4 etc

actually... 5. none of the above.

If you are just using the e-smith for a gateway/firewall (and NOT e-mail or ftp or anything like that) The individual users do not have to have accounts on the e-smith machine at all; in fact, being the delusional paranoid I am, I feel it better that the individual users in a strait "gateway/firewall" type setup DON'T have actual access to the e-smith box itself.  At work, I use e-smith for as a gateway/firewall for about 50 users and I KNOW that there is at least one who wishes he could get at the firewall to make some unauthorized changes.  Boy will he be ticked when I have time to research and figure out how to cut off his ICQ access!  That b@$7@rd is running an outside BUSINESS over ICQ DURING BUSINESS HOURS!  and micro$oft boy (boss) wont let me get him fired for it!  geesh... micro$oft boy DOES let me go in and randomly uninstall his ICQ, but for me, that just isn't enough!

Anyway, domain settings can be set to whatever local settings you feel appropriate and as far as LDAP, I really have never used it so I'm not sure what you'll need to do if you want it, I chose to pretty much ignore it in my setup.

PS... if anyone has any ideas about how to cut off a users access to ICQ... Please let me know!

To cut off ICQ for everyone, just comment out (prefix with '#") the loading of the ICQ masquerade module in /etc/rc.d/init.d/masq (and in its template). To cut it off for a particular machine, you'll need to use special IPChains rules. To cut it off for a particular (roaming) user - now there's some homework for you!! :-)

when he starts the icq program, he must first announce himself to the icq server: icq.mirabilis.com(:4000?). block it. i'm not sure if it works, but give it a try.
