I am trying to configure my SME to send email to client's SME box directly instead of trying to resolve to the internet

Please do not hijack someone else's thread for your issue.

qmail will ignore DNS for routing if you use the smtproutes config file.

I am trying to configure my SME to send email to client's SME box directly instead of trying to resolve to the internet (as they have domain set up by ISP) to test the email is all working fine.

You can test your client's smtp server capability using telnet or swiks. google for details.

Please do not hijack someone else's thread for your issue.

This always seems to come up...

Example:
Say you followed someones how-to on how to install program "Foo", and now you have a problem using program "Foo"...  Should you...:
A - Post a new topic asking your question?
B - Reply to the end of the topic where the how-to was posted?

If you answered B, you are right :-P  By replying to the end of the thread, all the people that are watching that topic will get an email notifying them of a reply.  Your chances of getting an answer to your question are much better that way.

Thanks,

Since I was trying to get MX records pointing to a local server.

No, you were trying to test a client's SMTP server.
