mail. for both smtp and pop3, have a look at 'hostnames and addresses' in server-manager

Do I need to set this up first before it works also how do I make the domain.com/webmail public meaning you can access it from any computer with web access.  I have it currently set to use https but should that make it not possible to be seen any where but on my lan.

To my understanding, if you use https, you can view your mail from anywhere on the web, but you cannot send, since that would require the same access as a spam list.  With SME 5.1.2 you can modify your smtpd_check_rules file and allow access to this, but like anyone here, I highly recommend you leave the security the way it is... "good" :)

As for setting it up... you'll have to have a valid domain that you've registered and set up a MX record for.  If you're not familar with what I'm talking about, go to www.register.com and surf around to find out what I mean.

Otherwise, if you've already got the domain and it is accessible from the outside world, by means of a ping for example, then you can either connect to your website via https://www.yourcomputer.com/webmail or you can set up a virtual domain for that and register that domain as well... such as www.mymaildomain.com/  ... hope this helps!

I ahve tried and done everything you have suggested and I am still unable to have anyone out side my local network able to access my webmail.

Dear Ian

You do have POP/IMAP set to Public in Other email settings in the server manager don't you ??

https OR http Webmail access should work OK from internal or external, just means one is secure and one is not.

Remember POP and Webmail are different things, but you can use either one to access your mail depending on requirements.

If you have not done so, go carefully through ALL your settings in server manager, you will learn a few things at the same time.

Sorry I was gettig POP and webmail mixed up myself.

I assume that you do have a domain name registered and other external users can connect to your server (web site or VPN) remotely via the Internet !!??

To connect to your webmail open a web browser and type:

https://www.yourdomain.com/webmail (if set for enabled secure https access only in server manager)

The webmail program IMP will open and you will then be asked for a user account login name and a password
Once entered, the email for that user will be displayed.

Can you do this on your local network ie from a workstation connected directly to the sme server ?

Also
If you do this from an external Internet connected location (and it does not work) then what message do you get ?

I have POP and webmail working OK on a remote located sme server

Let me know here.
