Hi Ive gt a SME 7.5 and am perplexed how to resolve a simple annoying problem- doesnt affect server performance though.

I usually get 4 emails notifying updates and backup errors- sent to root@local or admin@local...

Can anyone advise what the problem is? :-P

Thanks.

Look at the Header of each message to see what path the message took to finally get delivered. You may have long forgotten forwarding setup.

Hi Mary, I checked the email notifications and there are no forwarded instructions.

I get 4 notfications of emails sent to either:

root@... regarding cron failures/backups or updates (easily resolved)

anonymous@.... regarding clamav updates. (internet issue)

unsure why i get four notifications by email- is this a daemon configuration issue?? just weird.

Open ALL messages one by one in your email client eg Outlook, Thunderbird etc.
Look at the Properties or Headers of the message, different programs refer to it differently.
You can see all the mail servers the message passed through and the email addresses and aliases that the message was delivered to and then forwarded on to the final recipient address.
That should give you some clue.
Other than that carefully check all your users and groups settings to see if you have inadvertantly setup duplicate deliveries, eg a second sysadmin account that is receiving admin mail and then forwarding to yourself.
Other than that you may have problems with downloading messages eg if you use fetchmail, the mail server may not be identifying that the message has been delivered the first time and sends it again.

Other than that, check the various mail log files (View log files in server manager eg qpsmtpd, qmail etc), you should be able to track each message to see when and where it comes from.

Not without knowing exactly what the messages say.

You say "the problem". If you have multiple messages, then chances are you have more than one problem.

to clarify the post the notifications are duplicates. I get four duplicates of the same notification whether its a update notification or a backup notification.
The notifications are not the problem but the "duplicates".
As mentioned they are generally system emails.

Mary i will look more into your recommendations and will advise of the progress accordingly.
