use SMEServer as an unauthenticated outgoing smtp mail relay
« on: November 24, 2010, 10:55:46 PM »
How do I setup smeserver as a unauthenticated smtp relay?
Can I change smeserver outgoing smtp port to 587? How?
Can I have the smeserver send mail using my gmail or AOL smtp info and have outlook use SMESERVERIP as outgoing server unauthenticated?

I have 2 copiers on my network. They have  scan to email functionality.

I can no longer use the old ISP unauthenticated SMTP
New ISP(verizon)

1. Did internet connected test and came back good
2. Unable to send mail via webmail. Shows in sent items on horde/webmail but on in my inbox at gmail( see #4)
3. outlook using IP of SMESERVER  in smtp settings works(no username or password needed) but, no email in my gmail inbox.
4. checked spam filters - only offers for viagra, breast implants and google is hiring me cause i am special, (its not there)
5. Port 25 is blocked
6. Stupid copier will only send mail un-authenticated.
7. i do not care about security risks etc.
8. can ping google.com from putty logged in as root etc

Some logs after sending mail from webmail(horde)

Have you read the FAQ, ie the Email section.
It may have the answer you want, if not come back

I did. Numerous times. I also looked on google for other solutions. I thought it would be fairly common to use smeserver as an open relay.

Did you really read the FAQ ?
If so you would have seen these
http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:FAQ#SMTP_Authentication_TLS_before_Auth_disable_.26_enable
and the next article re using port 587, did you miss seeing this ?

By default no from WAN. SME is open relay from LAN. Why would you want everyone & anyone to be able to use your mail server from WAN ? You would be blacklisted as a spammer almost immediately !

No, since SME Server is meant to be a secure and stable platform.

I wonder why you want to be an open relay, it is considered very bad practice and is not appreciated by most providers. Can you elaborate on your needs? Perhaps you are looking in the wrong direction and we can provide you wit a better alternative solution.
You run a (high) risk of your server being abused by spammers and spambots when configured as open relay and I doubt that is what you want.
