Ian,
Use the server manager to create your backups. Select "Backup to desktop" and click "Perform", and the standard save-as dialog box will pop up asking you where to put the file.
As far as where it shows up if you ssh'd in? I have no idea.

p.s. there is a problem if you do this from within konqueror (at least with the 2.2 version). it writes to the web browser, not to a file. so use mozilla or something else.
