Before a user can log in to egroupware, you have to log in with your admin account in egroupware, click on the "Admin" button (located on the upper horizontal toolbar) then click "User accounts" and create the account for that user. You'll have to enter the LoginID (which should be exactly the same as the SME user account) but don't enter the password in egroupware. Also make sure the email address is exactly the same as the SME email address.

AFAIK there is no possibility of synchronizing accounts at the moment.

That is not how it works on my install. I have setup per the wiki and ANY user can log in with their SME user name and password. After this is done, the admin can go into the users panel and put in the user's correct name (the user is created in egroupware with the first name of "new" and the last name of "user") and assign them group membership, set application access, etc.

Remember that the SME user name is not the full email address. It is only the name part (user@contribs.org's user name would be just user).

Yes, the user can log in with his SME account in egroupware but he will see a warning message in egroupware that he doesn't have any rights to access the "Home" application. At least that's what happens on my installation.

We are on the same page then. I don't think I get the "Home" error that you talk about but can't remember for sure. Either way the admin has to touch the user in eGroupware to get the user's name correct and get the rights and group membership set up.

I do find it odd that the OP could not login directly with an active SME user name and password though as mine does allow it........

I wasn't 100% sure myself so I created a test user on my SME and tried to login with it in egroupware (without creating a login there first). That's when I got the warning message.

Yes, but the main point is that OP's problem is solved.
