Topic: noob question: I can join Domain, but cant login?

I have search far and wide and have not been able to find a direct answer to my issue.

Im trying to setup SME as just a plain directory server, for my windows xp users to join and log in so that I can have the benefits of conrtolling their accounts and using logon scripts without paying for ms server.

I am testing it with my own xp box, and I am able to join the domain, but im not able to log in. When I try to login, it tells me "domain is not available"

I have installed the updates, including samba, I have fiddled with the registry, but no go.

Any ideas? I could really use some help here.

That message is telling you that for some reason the workstation is not seeing or is not able to access the Primary Domain Controller (PDC), which in this case is the SME server. The reasons cod be numerous.

In server manager, did you configure SME to be the PDC ?
Are there any other servers and/or Domain Controllers on your network eg a Windows Server ?

You should tell us exactly what changes you made when you fiddled otherwise we have to guess.
Do you mean you applied the "sign or seal" registry patch that is on the SME server for Win XP ? ie
http://servername/server-resources/regedit/winxplogon.reg

Have you set the workgroup name in server manager to be the same as your PDC name ?

In Windows Explorer can you see the SME server by name and can you see the ibay shares ?

On the server show full output of
ifconfig

On the workstation show the full output of
ipconfig /all

I had the same problems with XP SP3 and gigabit network adapter. In Windows XP system log NETLOGON error 5719.

After applying reg change this problem is solved.
