Why 7.6??
« on: June 02, 2011, 02:09:47 AM »
I have been poking around some mirrors, and under /releases/testing/   I saw v.7.6
I was wondering, why is this being worked on? If I am not mistaken, 7.6 is still based on CentOS4
Why even bother? CentOS4 is already 4 year old release.
Why not just maintain 7.5 for security issues and updates only, and focus development efforts on v.8?

Since the development team is so small, time would be better spent by focusing on v.8 only, and not work on outdated software.

Just wondering

Traditionally SME versions update when the underlying Centos OS updates.

SME 7.6 must be based on Centos 4.9 released in March.

This is off topic for this forum since it concerns SME Server 7.x rather than 8 ;-)

Cactus,
My point was that release of v.8 is being delayed for YEARS now, while developers spent time working on insignificant update 7.5 - 7.6 . Next month CentOS is planning to release v.6, while we are still in Beta tests of our software v.8 which is based on CentOS.5

All the major software releases, like next release of wordpress, will only work on
* PHP version 5.2.4 or greater
* MySQL version 5.0 or greater

My point was, just forget about this insignificant update.  Developer time would be better spent working on v.8

It's not insignificant. It adds new hardware support. WIthout updates like that, SME 7 cannot be installed on some new hardware.

calisun, you are free to make your own decisions on what development work you do or you don't do. Others also make their own decisions. If you are concerned that SME8 is not completed yet, do something positive yourself to make it complete sooner.

If SME 8 was already out, there would be no need to worry about SME 7 installing on new hardware, nobody would even bother to look at v.7, they would all get v.8 since it already has better software and hardware support.

For SME Server to be out we need people verifying and testing fixed that are made by the development team. As you can see in the SME Server 8.x bug matrix. At this time there are 24 bugs awaiting verification, so let me use this post again to ask for help on them.

Please have a look at them and see of you can provide help in testing that the problem was resolved. Only after verification we can release the fixed package. Thanks in advance.

I disagree.. many people are using SME7 and they need security updates..
anyway, as cactus and charlie told you, get more involved in SME8 beta testing.. with your time as a beta tester, or as a developer or donating money

Locking Topic.

We need help to get SME 8 out. Until it is out there needs to be minimal effort on SME 7.x. Certainly SME 7.x is not slowing down SME 8.
