I wanted the remote control experience to have its own post here.
I have tried VNC clients of various makes.
But what shock me was this exciting bit i learned that is hard to find written about over the internet.
You can run the vmware virtual infrastructure client software that acts like a vnc client without using a browser to startup the software.
You can find the software on your windows computer after using ie(internet explorer) to make use of the console view while inside the vmware webpage control.
This vmware virtual infrastructure client(vic) software runs circles aroun any vnc client software i have used. The vic runs like greased lightning compared to vnc while accessing a vm on a lan. VNC maybe better if running from a non lan(slower) network connection such as remoting from offsite. The compression in the vnc client software will benefit the users.
You can copy text using the vic as opposed to the built in vnc server software vmware has.
What is most truly amazing is that with vic, it will start up the vm if it is not already running, when you access the vm.
Read that last line again.
That alone helps you keep from fighting vmware's awfull slow java webpage vm control panel.
That was going to be a biggy for me to deal with on simple users shutting down a remote and not getting it boot up again.
This alone is worth using if for no other reason than just start the vm machine.
I copied over the vic software to a new directory just beneath my root on a windows system.
You can also make a few minor changes in the top of the vic window.
The vic window looks almost exactly like vmware player but you cannot disable some devices such as the ethernet which is a damn good thing.
And that FAT vmware player window border lookalike is there too.
I hate that freaking border. It is distracting and takes up desktop space.
The vic software can run the vm in full screen mode and also ajust the vm's screen resolution very quickly on a windows vm by simple shrinking the vic window which is very quick and painless. This should also make remote control quicker from remote locations.
I am using gigabyte ethernet too which helps some.
I believe you can also download the current vic(vmware virtual infrastructure client) off the web also. The format for the parameters for the commandline use of vic was a bit trying, but i finally got the format right. Maybe it can add it here soon but i am not at my testing site.
