pc-xxxx instead of FQDN (dchp-dns-squid-sarg)
« on: June 28, 2010, 03:39:05 PM »
Hi all,
I'm looking for any help and advices for the right settings (config) of DHCP+DNS services in server-and-gateway mode to display real name of dhcp clients instead of pc-xxxx. DHCP leases show me the right FQDN of network clients, but trying to resolve client IP by nslookup did't find it. I need that for proper clients statistics in SARG reports. I've tried to set log_fqdn in squid.conf, but that did'nt help me.

Thanks a lot.

PS. I'm using SME 7.4 updated to 7.5

There was a rpm for SME 6 that did this.  I used it and it worked well.  I think this is the link to get the old rpm http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/downloads/sme-dhcp-dns-0.9-rc1.noarch.rpm (NOTE: I am not 100% sure this is the one I used.)

I would like to see this work for 7.5 also, but don't have any ideal how to do it.  If you have some know how maybe this would help you get a start on getting this working on SME 7.5.

search the bugzilla because there's already a NFR for this and a patch (to be tested)

Or you could manually (not good if you have hundreds) add the ip address to hostnames & address in the server-manager and that will show you a FQDN in your sarg logs.

Have you filled in a Bug Report over @ http://bugs.contribs.org ? Please don't wait to be told this way you help us to help you/others - Thanks!

First of all, thanks a lot for your replies.

RedBeard: I've tried http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/downloads/sme-dhcp-dns-0.9-rc1.noarch.rpm.But it was an error during install
Code: [Select]
patching file /etc/e-smith/web/functions/hostentries
Hunk #1 FAILED at 118.
1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file /etc/e-smith/web/functions/hostentries.rej
Refer to /usr/share/doc/sme-dhcp-dns-0.9 for further information
And as i can see, I had no skills to get that patch installing correctly, but it works! I see real FQDN names in sme7admin/SARG & Squid!

Stefano:
I spend half a day 'studying' bugs and found only one useful #2641 http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2641, but there is no any patches.
So, could you please let me know what bug (patch) you're talking about.

Thanks a lot!

Alex so you installed the sme-dhcp-dns-0.9-rc1.noarch.rpm on a SME 7.5?  I apologize if I may have not been clear.  I used that package on a DME 6.x box and it worked well.  I never tried it on SME 7.5.  I thought pointing to that rpm might give you an ideal of how to adapt it for a 7.5 box if you had some coding skill.

So does everything appear to be working correctly now?

I looked in bugzilla and couldn't fine the patch Stefano referred to either.  Hopefully he can provide further detail.

to RedBeard:
Yep, I just run me-dhcp-dns-0.9-rc1.noarch.rpm installation and checked logs of squid and sarg, and since yesterday everything is okay (even after some reboots). The only one thing I've mentioned early is Hunk #1 FAILED at 118, and I personally think that I'll close my eyes on that minor issue. If I'll have time, I'll try check what's wrong there.

But, anyway, I have one more server with SME 7.4 and I'm planning to upgrade it on 7.5 and will try patch from Stefano mentioned bug #2388. So, I'll update on that asap.

RedBeard and Stefano, thanks a lot!

hi all,

Sorry to dig this topic as I have same situation with TS. I have SME 7.5.1 and really want to implement this just don't know how to apply the patch mentioned by Stefano. To be honest haven't tried patching a file in my life as I have little knowledge with linux.  Please someone out there please guide how to do it

Rocel
