Raid Issue on a SME 7.5.1 in a Supermicro h8dce rev 3.1
« on: August 09, 2011, 09:55:30 AM »
I install SME 7.5.1 in a supermicro h8dce rev 3.1, and i dont enable the motherboard raid as it is "fakeraid", so i opted for a linux software raid.
My main issue is while it set up ok, took wy to much time to format, and create quotas  and then when restart it was trying to resynd the raid 5 disk array, while i left it alone do it overnight, in the morning i found it in kernel panic mode whith both raids unusable.
My setup is 5 disk 2 TB, while i would prefer to use a smaler disk for startup/system and a 4 Disk raid for fileserver needs (e.g /home) but i cant find a custom parition raid option
I would prefer to be able to make custom partitions and select raid type for the rest of the disk

Any info will be apresiated, as i'm new to SME server but i love the product easy to use as a file server in a quit mix environmet as mine with aproc 20 pcs (xp,vista and 7) some Apple MAC OSX and 2 old Apple system 9.x that everything work fine without any effort.!!!!

Thanks again

hi, welcome here

the only way to achieve your goal is to use 2 small disks (raid1 sw) for the OS and then, after everything is up & running add the other disks, create a raid array and follow this howto

Is there still an issue with 2TB limit, since i would like to use a 500 GB HD for system, and then setup the 4x2TB HD as a raid 5 with a total og aprox 5.7 Gb mounted under e-smith/files where i setup my ibays

Is it achievable?

Thanks again for your support

Is there still an issue with 2TB limit,

is it a question? :-)
AFAIK there's no 2TB limit.. I'm using 4x1.5 TB no spare raid5 arrays.. but I have no expereince with larger hds

since i would like to use a 500 GB HD for system,

I suggest you to use 2 disks and let SME create a raid1..

The reason i ask about 2TB is this http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1963

Thanks for advice i will make the RAID1 for the system, can i use smaller SSD disks, is there any real world benefit lets say 2x60gb ?

Thanks again

P.S Do you know by any chance if there is a problem with nvidia on supermicro to handle corectly the 2TB HDs?
