Kernel panic - syncing: Fatal Exeption in interrupt error
« on: November 03, 2011, 05:20:45 PM »
The system has crashed/hung twice in as many weeks with the following error on the screen

Kernel panic - syncing: Fatal Exeption in interrupt

I'm not sure if there was more info as I was not here for these crashes.

1. Is there some place I can look in the logs for this error if it was writen to the logs, with possibly more data.

2. The system has been running flawlessly a year or two. I havent done any updates for a few months, so I dont think its a change of software that is causing the problem.

3. I have found some reports in of this problem with my simple error message anyway. But basically find bugzilla hard to understand if there is a solution. I'm inexperienced using bugzilla. However it has been reported in the past. My version is 7.5.1 and 2.6.9-89.31.1.ELsmp kernel.

Im not sure what my next steps are. The MB is IBM Eserver Xeon CPU. I think model 8876-11x.

Thanks.

...Xeon CPU.
Total guess... think physical.
Xeon... CPU and chassis fans still working, filters clean?
Kernel panic... power?
If the box is too hot or has dicky power then SME
can hardly file a lucid log report pointing a finger!
Run memtest ...if the box can manage it.
It's all up to you, you're the only one on scene.

I think there is more information displayed then only that. Can you somehow post the full output, perhaps by simple photograph of the screen? The vital information is in the output leading up to the kernel panic line...

My guess this is somehow hardware related and I would bet on disks or memory. I suggest you to test your harddrives and run a memtest on your server if you can take it out of service for some time...

Bit late on responding to this, Sorry.
Unfortunetely I was not around when this happened and so pertinent info was not recorded.

Thanks for the first note on cleaning hardware etc. Maybe that's it something to investigate.

On the second comment from Cactus, Is there anywhere that the error's could be written to that I can look at. (if anything was written) I have looked in the /var/log for something but not sure which file to look at.

Obviously if not then I will have to wait until next time it happesns and write down all the details.

Thanks.

If recorded at all, it would be recorded in /var/log/messages, but since this is the equivalent to the blue screens in windows, it is a crash and most of the times data can not be logged anymore.

Obviously if not then I will have to wait until next time it happesns and write down all the details.
Yes, but the easiest way is to make a photo of the screen. The information is dense and hard to write down, the risk of typos is high when you do so. A photo would be easily made in this digital age :-)

You need to host your screenshot in the cloud, e.g. somewhere on the internet using pastebin, imageshack or the like. Adding a URL locally on your system does not allow us to see it.

Apart from that, please open a new topic and do not hijack others, this is not a topic on general kernel errors, yours might be different.
