A little help please!
« on: February 28, 2012, 01:01:47 PM »
Hi guys,

I have put a fresh install of the latest version (Not BETA) and am trying to setup a Windows XP machine onto the Domain.

So far, I have been able to connect it to the workgroup wpl and it asked for login and password, I entered this and it worked. Good times!
I can access the web manager for SME allowing me to configure it on the fly.

But, I can not join the domain wpl.local
Its just not found, XP cant connect to it.
I've done some searching and applied the logon hotfix? That come with SME.

This is currently just for lab as I intend on using Windows 7 Clients, but want to get it workign first.

So any help on getting the domain wizard in XP to connect to the domain?
So I can login with the users I have created on the SME Server and sort the file sharing so nothing is saved on the clients PCs.

Also, we use Webmails from the website domain wpl.org.uk - Can I setup SME to login to the webmail server through the internet and exchange that way? Instead of it being its own webmail server.

Thanks alot for reading this far,

Dean.

Just use the name wpl, ie the same as the workgroup name that is configured in sme server and in your workstations.
By the way I strongly suggest you do not use Windows type naming parlance, as it will get you into trouble eventually.
ie do not use wpl.local just use wpl & so on.

You may need to try changing the workgroup name to something else temporarily and then rename back to what is required then try joining the domain. Some little quirk with Windows IIRC.
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.
The Search & other links to useful information are at top of Forum.

I have also had to change the machine name after changing the work group name. after the reboots, I have been able to connect to the domain.
If you think you know whats going on, you obviously have no idea whats going on!

Thank you for your reply Mary,

I renamed the Workgroup to WPL and was able to connect via the Domain wizard straight away. Result!

But, I've come accross group policys now..I can ofc set them individually to every PC but wanted to do it through SME.. Is this possible?

I wish to setup default printers and roaming profiles for groups etc, restrict there permissions in Windows like the Control Panel and what not but allow Admins to do as they like and need!

Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Dean.
