SMTP not working
« on: April 04, 2000, 08:27:24 AM »
Hi,

I installed e-smith and I can receive mail just fine.  The problem is when I go to send mail out to someone who is not on our system, I get an error returned saying something like "this domain is not in the recipients list".  What could be the problem and does anyone know how to fix it?  I didn't think there were any special tricks to SMTP.  Could it be that my MX records have not propegated the internet yet?

No, your MX records probably don't have anything to do with it. The message you describe sounds a lot like (but not exactly like) the message that the qmail mail transport agent gives when unauthorised realying is attempted. Which system does the message come from?

If you have configured your e-smith server to use your ISP's mail relay for outgoing mail (the SMTPSmartHost) feature, then you may see this message if your ISP has not authorised you to relay via their system. This would be unusual, and you should ask them to change their system settings.

Does this happen for all outside email addresses or just for some? You may be unlucky, and your correspondent has a problem in their email system or with their ISP, in which case the message has nothing to do with your server at all.

I'm sorry I can be more specific, but I would need some details that you haven't provided to give a definitive answer.

Best wishes

Charlie

Having a similar problem, I use Comcast@Hom service, Maryland.  I've got a registered domain name pointing to my assigned IP address.  But mail from outside fails, regarless which how sent (ie. user@domainname.com or user@ipaddress.com) internally, they both work.

A message sent from Hotmail to below address results in below retrun notice.

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at hotmail.com.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

:
x.x.x.x does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts
(#5.7.1)
Giving up on x.x.x.x.

Any suggestions?  (btw - I "x"ed out the exact ip address)

Thank you for your suggestions.
Here are the details of my dilema:
From the internal side of things I am able to receive mail when email client is set to receive mail via POP3 at "localhost" and I am also able to send mail via SMTP when email client is set to send mail at "localhost" (This I discovered after reading a previous posting here) . So on the internal side all is well.

When I am on the external (Internet side) from home for example and connected to my dialup ISP and try to send mail using my work account, I must change my settings to reflect "mail.mydomain.com" for both POP3 and SMTP rather than "localhost". I then can send email to anyone on that system successfully, but if I try to send to someone who is not on the "at work" system I get  "Remote host said: 553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1) " error.
Is there a solution for this? If I do work from home I would like the mail recipients to see that the message is coming from the work account rather than my personal account.
Thanks again

Ed

Thanks Charlie

No, I'm not using my ISP to forward mail and I'm not using the SMTPSmartHost option. The error message applies when sending to anyone who is external to my mail system and when used from a branch office. The users have email accounts on the company mail server, when they send to another user on the system all is well. If they try to send email to someone at another Domain the error message is displayed stating "this domain is not in the recipients list".
