Modify or update existing rpm contrib

I wonder if anyone could help explain how to update and existing rpm ?

I was messing about with smeserver-wbl which hasn't been touched for a while and noted that there were a few issues.

I would like to have a play and see if could modify it slightly and cure a few problems as it is a handy contrib.

As it is just code/templates rather than binary stuff it should be a bit easier   :?

I have had a read here :

But there are notes to stay things may be out of date. What exactly ?

Next is how do I get the 'source' for the original RPM ? Or will I have to build things like a new spec file ??

I think the current source is here:

And from what I see here:

The "default assignee" is darrel may, and the "default qa contact" is the sme server contrib team.
