I've completed the installation and configuration of 5.5 using the "Server and Gateway Mode - Dialup Access" configuration, taking all the defaults. It completes the modem test successfully and was able to install the update blade without a hitch.
However, I can barely get my local network (a mac) to talk to it. My mac is able to obtain its ip via dhcp, but I cannot access the server manager via
http://hostname/server-manager. After about 20-30 seconds, I'm prompted with the password screen, but it takes about 5-10 minutes before the server seems to respond - usually, the browser gives up and times out. After numerous attempts at reloading the page, I've been able to get as far as getting the left side frame, but that's about it. I've tried using
http://192.168.111.1/server-manager as well to avoid dns problems issues, but still no luck.
It also doesn't seem to respond to pings. After dozens of pings, I finally got one single response. Dns queries also fail, except for myhost.mydomain, which immediately responds with 192.168.111.1.
Seems that the squid proxy does seem to function partially, as opening a page to
www.google.com caused the server to dial my isp and load the page though it took over 20 minutes and it still wasn't done loading the image when I aborted it.
My server seems to be acting like a 386 with 16mb of ram, but it's a 200Mhz pentium with 384mb or ram and a 1.6 gig drive. Though not a powerhouse, it certainly meets the minimum hardware requirements. Now I've played around with installations of IPcop and Smoothwall on this box and each worked very well. BTW, "top" says I'm about 97% idle.
Where should I look for answers? I scanned several log files (messages and apache) but nothing seemed very noteworthy. I'm going to try another download and burn another cd in case something got corrupted. I'm not ready to give up on SME just yet....
