Guys please help

Tryiong to Install VMware 1.0.10 contrib on New SME 8 Server

i can install the VMware Contrib including " yum install gcc "

when i do a " vmware-config.pl " i get the following error

This program cannot tell for sure, but you may need to upgrade libc5 to glibc
before you can run VMware Server.

vmware 1.X is dead.. and I doubt it will ever work on SME8 (CentOS5.X)

you should move to other kind of virtualization sw

It is, but it works fine on SME 8 and still available for download.

well i still seem to be having problems with installing vmware 1

it worked great for me on SME 7.5

do you guys recommend VirtualBox as an alternative or another product(s) ?

any help greatly appreciated

Bud..

you should tell us more..
I mean.. if you need SME and windows and/or other virtual machines, I would change point of view: I would install something like vmware esxi5 or proxmox on the bare metal and the virtualize SME, windows, ecc..
I never used virtualbox on SME, I'm currently using it only on my laptop (ubuntu 10.04) and it simply works.

I have a SME8 32 bit with Vmware 1.0.10 installed; as far as I can remeber I had to install kernel-headers & kernel-devel too to have Vmware correctly compiled.
Not sure this can be related to Your problem.

I am running SME8 with the latest Proxmox and i am not having any issues.
I do miss having SME8 on metal with two drives in Raid 1 mode.
It is just going to force me to do a better job of backing up, but it will provide a great test situation for multiple oses on one piece of equipment.  But all production on main like duties is on metal raid 1.

From what i have read lately from many different internet sources. If you are going to be serious about running virtual machines on a Centos os. Then Centos 6 is the version for that compared to Centos 5, which SME8 is based on. What i understand is that there have been substantial advancements and if you want to make use of a SSD. Trim is suppose to be supported, but there are newer Intel SSD drives that are doing a better job to garbage collection, if you give the drive a small amount of idle time.

You should make in this way:

yum install gcc
yum install libX11* (not sure if necessary)
yum install libXt*
yum install xinetd

yum install kernel-headers

or

yum install kernel-pae-headers

depending on Your installed kernel  (uname -a); in my actual server(s) is always needed to compile kernel modules;

Then you can install Vmware and configure it:

yum localinstall  VMware-server-1.0.10-203137.i386.rpm

vmware-config.pl

ln -s ../init.d/vmware /etc/rc7.d/S19vmware

modify /etc/xinetd.d/vmware-authd to prevent console hang while trying to connect to server.

\# description: The VMware remote access authentification daemon

service vmware-authd
{
    disable         = no
    port            = 902
    socket_type     = stream
    flags           = NOLIBWRAP
    protocol        = tcp
    wait            = no

adding flags = NOLIBWRAP

This works but You'll note be able to configure Vmware server via db commands (the current contrib does not work with SME8); see wiki in the section http://wiki.contribs.org/SME8.0_Contribs_QA#smeserver-vmware

i am trying to install the " Management UI for VMWare Server "

I usually use the VMware Server Console client, but I believe it will help yum install libXi

According to vpurger and quoting the wiki "you can also use VMware Console from a client computer" and this is what I usually did and do now.
You can also start and stop you machines via command line; some examples:

/usr/bin/vmware-cmd "/var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines/Windows XP Professional/Windows XP Professional.vmx" getstate
/usr/bin/vmware-cmd "/var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines/Windows XP Professional/Windows XP Professional.vmx" stop
/usr/bin/vmware-cmd "/var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines/Windows XP Professional/Windows XP Professional.vmx" start
