Forward web virtual domain requests to internally located machine
janet:

You original question was
"I have a need to forward web services to an internally located machine"
and it was answered accordingly, ie to use proxy pass.
If you want to do other things please ask the whole question, rather than asking in bits an pieces, it just wastes our time as the answer will change if the question changes.
So what do you really want to do, in totality ?
mchettle:
I apologize for any confusion. I wish only to forward the web services to an internal server, retaining (if possible) the mail services on the SME server.
I am working my way through the links provided (thank you). [a bit like playing snakes and ladders], and am getting a bit of a handle on the ProxyPass process. It looks like it will do what i want, but need to study all the ramifications so as to get the best configuration for my needs.
Regards Mark.

Using proxy pass should achieve what you want.
AFAIK it is still a domain that is valid on your gateway server, it's just entered differently.
Just do it, if you don't like the outcome just change it back.
SME is very easy to reconfigure like this.
