Serial/modem tty device on v4
« on: April 04, 2000, 11:23:37 PM »
I just downloaded and installed the beta (although the file says esmith4.0b3).  No matter the PC I install on I get the same error trying any external modem.
On boot the serial ports are detected as ttyS00 and ttyS01, when I look in /dev and in the esmith config the device selection is ttyS0 ttyS1 etc.  I verified esmith sets the /dev/modem as it should, but none of these seem to be the actual serial ports.  The log shows a timeout reaching the device.  I have tried several ext modems and installed on several PCs to confirm.  Any ideas on this?

The latest is 4.0b6.

Can you explain what you mean here? Do you mean that /dev/ttyS0 is not a serial port? Or something else?

That's usually an indication that the IRQ setting is non-standard, or there is an IRQ clash. You can try using the setserial program to auto-probe for IRQ - that might help you.
