Pre-note: I know that this is the 8.x forum and I mentioned that I am using the 7.x version. I chose this forum because i think the answer will be the same and I am planning an upgrade for my gateway early next year to the 8.x. So this answer will need to include the 8.x answer and whether the 7.x answer is the same.
Hello,
I have what I think will be a simple issue to resolve. Currently, I am running a 7.x SME Server as a gateway. There is a small collection of workstations and servers behind this gateway. One of those servers is an Ubuntu server that I am using as a web server for the local subnet. I have set up the local domain in the "Domain" section of the gateway and have changed the IP of
www.domain.local to the Ubuntu server's IP in the "Host-names and Addresses" section. Everything works fine except when I try to access the web site on the Ubuntu server with only the domain name (domain.local) from a local workstation. When I do this, I get the gateway's Apache server, not the Ubuntu's Apache server. I have tried to set up a hostname that is basically blank, hoping to get domain.local by itself to resolve to the Ubuntu's Ip address but instead got the following error message:
"Operation status report
The hostname must contain only letters, numbers, and hyphens, and must start with a letter or number"
So, how do I get domain.local to resolve to the Ubuntu's IP address?
Note: The Ubuntu server is being used because the site requires a newer MySQL than SME is currently using. So, hosting the site on the gateway is not an option. Also, just requiring everyone to use the
www.domain.local URL and calling it job well done, will not work. The site is comprised of 2 CMSs and the communications between them is conducted using the domain.local URL. The software automatically truncates the
www.domain.local URL.
Thanks in advance,
Chris
