Synology NAS to work with SME?
« on: December 06, 2010, 08:16:41 AM »
Hi all,

I'm thinking about purchasing a Synology NAS device to go on my network with my SME Server. It has the option to connect to Active Directory, which I've done on other networks without a problem, however I'm wondering if there will be any problem with connecting it to SME for Authentication. I don't want my users to have to have another set of usernames and passwords.

Has anyone done this before?

Active Directory is a Microsoft propriety concept and is not available on Linux. An alternative might be LDAP.

I don't want my users to have to have another set of usernames and passwords.
SME Server 7.x does not support remote auth through LDAP, this is currently being developerd for SME Server 8 which is in beta.

Thanks Cactus,

I get all that. I guess what I was asking is, does anyone know what sort if connection these devices made with the DC? Is it an Active Directory connection, or the old style if WinNT type that SME provides?

If it's any help, the Synology devices use a Linux back end. I posted the same question on the Synology forum, just waiting to hear from anyone with experience.

(I didn't realize it was coming in the next version.. I'm suddenly looking forward to ver 8 )

By indications given elsewhere on this site, SME v8.0 will not have the remote auth through LDAP functionality, but it is being planned to be in a later release eg SME v8.1

Hi:

I am new to this group. Noticed that Smitro has installed SME to Synolody NAS. And I'd like to do the same. Can anyone give me some advice how to do that?

Thanks for your help.

Kind regards,

Ke

Hi Kezhu,

This is an old post... that's ok, I'm still using both the Synology NAS and SME and they're both working great. There is not much to know connecting the synology to SME is pretty much the same as connecting any machine to your SME Server domain.

On the Synology NAS go to Control Panel > Directory Services.Tick the Join Domain box, type in your local domain name, then enter your DNS server (probably SME server), then apply, it will ask you for a password to join the domain, enter your admin username and password from your SME Server.

You can then apply domain permissions to shares. Most things integrate with the domain username and password, but there are some apps that don't for example, I think the Audio Station requires a local user.

Only other tip I can give you is to remember when prompted for a username and password and you want to use your SME account, the username field will need to be formatted as Domain\username (same as any domain authentication).

Hope that helps.
