It is with the deepest regret I have to inform you that Chris Burnat passed away on Wednesday 11th June.

Chris had been unwell for some time but despite all his problems he had continued to work on SME until very recently.

As many of you know, Chris had been a long time supporter of SME, and latterly Koozali.

He worked tirelessly in the background, one of the great unsung heroes, and his recent work on v9 has been phenomenal.

Quite simply v9 would be nowhere near ready without is enthusiasm and invaluable contributions to it.

We all owe him the most enormous debt of gratitude.

Though professional in his approach he was never one to make a fuss, particularly as his illness took its toll, and I am sure that if he knew that I was writing this much he would have blown my ears off !

However, his support of both SME, and me personally, should not pass as quietly as he has.

Amongst his wide and varied interests I know that he was a lover of music, and a piano player, a lover of food, loved his weekend retreat to the jungle for time in the bush with his partner, had a keen interest and knowledgeable of local radio, was quietly funny, and an all round lovely man.

He will be sorely missed by us all.

Ironically his last words to me a few days ago were 'I wish I could do a little more SME'.

So do I Chris. So do we all.

I met Chris many years ago and visited him in his home @ Balmain to pickup some song cueing software for radio stations that he was distributing at the time.

In our visit together he told me of his interest in linux and some of the challenges he was having with the distros he was using at the time. I told him about SME server and he seemed interested. I was very surprised to later see his name popping up in the forum helping others and his knowledge of & contributions to SME seemed to increase in leaps & bounds.

His dedication will be sorely missed - see you on the flip side Chris.

Thanks for the anecdote, marxb. We owe you a big debt of gratitude for sending Chris our way - and a huge one to Chris for all he did for us.

The release announcement that was sent to various mail lists did include this:

Chris Burnat
============

It is with the deepest regret we have to inform you that on Wednesday 11th June
Chris Burnat passed away. He was one of the most ardent supporters of
Koozali SME Server and we all owe him an enormous debt of gratitude.

We dedicate this release of SME Server 9.0 to Chris.
Without him it would be nowhere near ready. If you download and use it,
please remember him and his work, and that of all the other contributors
who work tirelessly to make Koozali SME as good as it is.

We extend our thoughts and deepest sympathies to his family.

...and Chris is also mentioned here, which has a link on the main wiki page

A very sad day indeed.

FWIW he wouldn't want us sitting around moping - he'd want us to make sure SME survives and be getting on with getting new releases out etc.

Our best tribute to him is to make sure that happens.

Just an idea: maybe the best way for us to keep Chris' memory alive is by dedicating every 11th of June as a "Chris' Koozali bug hunting day" (or something similar). Several weeks/days prior to this date we could post the necessary messages asking for as many people as possible to join the effort of finding, solving and verifying as many bugs as possible.

Bug hunting indeed.

Right now we need testing and verifications to convert the current Betas.

Anyone who wants to pay their respects can launch in tomorrow.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated....

I'm still so impressed that someone so lively brought us a part of his (developed) legacy for our solutions needed in the future.
As you put the youtube contribute video, and the final product SME together it's a really nice mixture of good influences and unselfish hard work that make this product unique. And thereby of course keep me motivated for contributing and participating in the nearby future.

Thanks Chris... RIP

I have my own IT company, so if this product is going to help me and my customers  in raising the value of iT quality than I will definitly make a donation. But I'm hoping thru my busy schedule to post some support or bug related topics as well.
