operating system not found - HELP!!
« on: June 24, 2014, 05:34:52 AM »
Hi Guys,

Any tips or tricks to get a server running. Maybe HD failure.

I have SME 7.?? with 2 x 500gb drives in raid 1.

System says 'operating system not found'

One of the drives makes some funny noises on start up. Unplugged it and tried to launch. Still get then 'operating system not found'. Just in case, I have tried to start on both drives. No love!

I do have a backup (darrell may) from thursday if I am desperate.

QUESTIONS
Any tips to get it going?
If I have to use the backup, does Dmay backup from V7 work on SME V8?

Any help would be great.

Ben

Sounds like a serious problem. I don't have raid knowledge, so maybe someone else can assist.

Maybe it is also a good time to consider new hardware and upgrade to SME 9. The latest ISO of SME 9 is 99,99% the upcoming final.

Probably. I have attached single drive to Windows machine and used a number of EXT viewers. Nothing. Maybe both drives are dead.

I am currently installing 8.1

Just need to know if my Darrell May backup from last Thursday will restore to 8.1? or am I wasting my time.

Can I restore the DAR files to a PC then just manually copy to new server?

Thanks in advance.

I presume you will have to install SME 8 then the contrib you are using to do your backups and THEN use it to restore..

I doubt very much if SME 9 would be compat with that particular contrib, is it even a SME 8 contrib?

You may even have to do a SME 7 install, install the conrtib, restore your data and then, upgrade it to SME 8.

Good Luck

Added: You can open a dar file from within SME using a MC addon..see the relevant DAR wiki page  http://wiki.contribs.org/DAR2#Midnight_Commander_.28MC.29_dar-extension

and are you talking about the old DAR2 contrib?

http://wiki.contribs.org/DAR2#Midnight_Commander_.28MC.29_dar-extension

If it is install a clean SMe8.1 install the contrib setup the relevant and same job parameters and the restore should be accessible and usable..

Thanks Terry F fr the reply. Yes, OLD DAR2.

I have installed. Changed the spcs to CIFS.... Seems to be doing something!!!
Literally SH&*&ing my pants here..

I hope it works.

Should I be using something other than DAR2?

The default back/restore of SME8 and 9 is built on that old contrib..much better..

Backup from the console in particular works very well and on any new install you can restore that backup  during the install.

Hope it all works out..

As SME7 has been declared EOF for about a year, all repositories are in the obsoletes directories. See http://wiki.contribs.org/SME8.0_Contribs_QA#Working_available_through_SME7_smecontribs_repo_in_obsolete to ajdust your yum config

Code: [Select]
db yum_repositories set smecontribs repository \
Name 'SME 7 - contribs' \
BaseURL 'http://mirror.contribs.org/releases/obsolete/7.6/smecontribs/$basearch' \
GPGCheck yes \
Visible no \
status disabled

signal-event yum-modify
yum clean all

I think 7.3 is not going to help. I am downloading 7.6.

The DAR files are on my Windows USB drive. Any tips to access them from Windows. Tried DARgui etc... Nothing.

Could the DAR be stuffed?

How big is the backup?

The restore may take longer than 1/2 hour...

Not sure about DAR2 and 8.1 it used to work on 8.0

The question re is the backup archive OK is going to be the biggy..

Good Luck

Feel for you, been there and don't want to be there again :-)

I would have been hopeful that one drive was still readable, rare to see both fail at same time..

or one failed some time ago and went unnoticed maybe?

Anyway good luck..

Yeah I'm guessing the array was already degraded when the 2nd one failed. Out of curiosity, what make/model drives are they?

the right question is "does anybody reads admin's emails?"

The contribs smeserver-raidstatus send an email each week on the current state of Your Arrays, (furthermore you can also see them in the server-manager). Of course you can decide which recipient will be concerned.

I have done that because the email admin box is often spammed by many other 'important' informations.

S3 = cloud, Internet is slow for big data backups & retrieval.

Better I think to have 2 x USB drives & rotate (swap) them daily, & use the server manager Backup & Restore function to configure a full & then daily incremental backup(s) to the locally connected USB drive. Use the backup to workstation function & select local USB drive as the destination. This runs automatically every night & will tolerate if you forget to swap the USB backup disk.
Remove the USB drive not currently being used to a safe off site location every night.
That way you have two backups in case one fails, as well as RAID1 redundancy.

Relatively fast restore from locally attached USB drive when or if needed
Sleep soundly at nights then.

Stop using DAR2 as it has been superseded by the current sme server backup system that uses DAR.
AFAIK DAR2 is no longer supported.
I would use Affa instead if you must create seperate different backup jobs.
Despite bug warnings etc, backup to (& Restore from) local USB drive seems OK using Affa.

Going to pick up drive now. Apparently they got it all. Not sure how they do it, pretty fancy place and $700 later!

The first drive was a total write-off

You cannot safely open drives, they are hermetically sealed. It can only be done in a clean environment, sealed from normal air contaminants.
If one microscopic particle of dust gets inside, the drive surfaces are ruined.

When critical data is involved, the seemingly high cost of data recovery can be small compared to the cost of time & effort (man or woman power where possible) to recreate the data.

Hi All,

learning more. I was using the HP hardware raid and not getting any notifications. I think the SME software raid will take care of that.

Drives were seagate barracudas. 500gb.

$700 was pretty reasonable. They got everything, so in theory, I could just plugin and it would work, BUT I was on 7.6, so have used this opportunity to go to 8.1, fresh drives etc... now just copying things as needed.

They have a clean room, If i had to go down that path,, they said more like $1500 and only about 10% chance as other raid disc was really bad.

Settle petal..:-) I was alluding to attaching the drive via external means to a USB adapter and trying to access the data..

When critical data is involved, the seemingly high cost of data recovery can be small compared to the cost of time & effort (man or woman power where possible) to recreate the data.

When all seems lost and there is absolutely nothing else to do, and its to expensive anyway, I like to try stuff, like this:
Once resurrected a dead Seagate 320gb drive that had failed due to a firmware bug, have a read of this, interesting and just a little fun to try and even better when it succeeds, it did :-)

Don't get me wrong, if the data is "money" give to the pros, it just depends how much you want or are prepared to pay. Its just I am water tight
