ports for mail
« on: August 05, 2014, 10:31:10 AM »
Hi,
I do some checks/test on my SME-server and have some questions about mail settings:

When I connect to the mail server from my phone I have put these values:
Incoming mails: username/password IMAPS/993, SSL(accept all certificates)
Outgoing mails: username/password  SMTP/465  SSL(accept all certificates)

I have also opened ports 465, 993 and 25 in my router's firewall to make things work.

Now I read that port 465 isnt used anymore for SMTPS. 587 should be used. But it looks like 465 is still used on the SME server.
So, my questions:
Should I continue to use 465?
Do I need to have port 25 open i my router?

SME uses port 465 (which is SMTP over SSL). Port 587 (often called submission port) usually offers SMTP+TLS (and nothing is listening on this port 587 on SME). So, yes, you should continue using port 465 with SSL. Alternatively, you can also use the standard port 25 and enable TLS.
Regardless of what you use for your client, you'll need to open port 25 if you want inbound mails from the outside
C'est la fin du monde !!!
