Servaer has drasticaly slowed down
« on: August 15, 2002, 07:34:52 PM »
Hi!
I have discovered that its not my provider but my e-smith  (4) machine that has reduced the speed of my downloads by 1/6.
I put the adsl connection directly to my internet machine and it is back up to proper speed.
This has happened over the last 3 months and I always thought it was my ISP.
Would this be e-smith corrupting or a hardware (nicks?) is their a way of testing without pulling things appart?

Thanks!

Neil

What do you have between the ADSL and your LAN before you connected directly to the ADSL router (or whatever) ???
Here i'm using a common switch with 8 ports between the ADSL router and the LAN.
The SME 5.5 is configured as "server only" but delievers the services; FTP, Mail, HTTP and File&Print without any delays.

Maybe you should try to connect some other hub/switch in your system before making some other "drastic" movements.

The adsl goes to my e-smith then to my 8 port hub, and the rest of my machines connect to the hub.
Right now I have the adsl cable directly connected to my internet machine.

What happens if you connect the adsl directly to the hub then test from your client. As yet you have not eliminated the hub as a possible cause of the problems.
You should also try swapping nic's around.

I too noticed a problem a while back.  While downloading any files if I start an upload I see my ping times to my gateway go up from 28ms to over 3 seconds!

I had Verizon out here to check my ADSL connection because my ISP said it had nothing to do with their end.  I found that if I hooked my laptop or theirs directly to the ADSL line I had great two-way speeds.

I have my ADSL going directly to my SME 5.1.2 machine and then into a Linksys BFSR41 router/switch acting as a switch and then to my PC network.

I have not taken the time to troubleshoot this, but I noticed it shortly after upgrading to Update-1 for SME 5.1.2.

I imagine it is something I did because I have not heard of any bug reports about it.

How are your ping times when you are uploading Neil?  Do you find that your speeds are only slow when you are uploading?
