@MScapin : you're right but would you be kind enough to give us your opinion about :

[X] yes, a sub-forum here to help developer is a good idea.
[ ] no, the koozali tools and rules are good enough, they should change nothing !

thanks,

@Cervantes Dimitri : Thanks !
@MScapin : Thanks !
and one more time this debate is not a fight...

@Stefano : I will try to make an effort if you create the post for this vote, i will try to expose my arguments.

P.S.: This forum http://scenari-platform.org/forum/ is an exemple for me (sorry, it's a fench forum for developers and users of scenari-platform)...there are no public RPM to install a scenari-server (db/lite) on SME Server  ;-)

@all: as I said I'm not against this idea.. but, I can say that the same request has been made in the past..

Anyway, the big problem with a "dev" forum section is that ALL the code/patch etc MUST be posted in bugzilla too.. so WE (we all) need someone that will do such a task.. thinking about we don't find anybody that will test new packages..

@Xavier: let's say we have this new section.. would you spend some time to carry the task? and to promote here in the forums the test/verification of new packages?

The package don't need to be tested all the time, it's an helping forum, like the contribs forum.

no, let me explain better..

sometimes a new package (updated or with some bug fixes) must be vtestend and verified..
everybody here can do it, but it's hard to find peopla available.. maybe it's only a "visibility" issue..

we need somebody that, when needed, says "hallo people, a new abc.rpm is available for testing/verification.. please spend some time to do it and report in bugzilla, at bug xyz, your result, thank you"

that's all

I'm not against creating a new sub forums, but frankly, will it be used ? A mailing list is soooo much more convenient than a forum that I doubt it will. Anyway, I'll try to do so when I have 5 minutes of spare time (someone can open a bug so I don't forget to do it, yes, on BZ ^^)

Mailing list is fine, but a new sub forum would be great to help if someone got the same problem (like me with the RPM), he juste googleit or search on the forum and he will see my topic with the solution.
A forum is much better to save all the information.

Well....if I'm asking for a sub-forum for developers it's because i need it ! It will soon be holidays and i will loose my students.

More seriously, the answer is YES...

And the answer is that if you ask nicely, talk sensibly, leave out the rhetoric and politics and opinion, anything is possible :-)

One of the main reasons that users are tended to be steered to ML for dev talk is that it is quicker and easier to read, and often the devs that there are only tend to read the ML regularly, and not the forums. The forums were intended to be a place for USERS to discuss and help each other. It was never meant to be a design/development area - that's what the ML and bug tracker are for.

Yes, I ought to come here to the forums more often myself, even with my limited skill set, but I have enough other lists and stuff to read and the forums just take to long to read at a quick glance. Ironically I got here from the bug...... so the system DOES work.... ! Bugs and ML flag things to the devs and other senior members.

I have started using Tapatalk on a few foro which is quite handy and have asked Daniel if we could have a look at implementing it here as I believe there is a Simple machines plugin.

Anyway, I hope that the new dev forum is useful but please remember that eventually any changes or new features etc need to end up in a bug - the bug tracker is THE central repository for anything important. Always has been, always will be. To get things tracked, tested, and verified, it needs to end up there.

Yes, in the fullness of time that could be github or wherever, but the point is that you need one central place to track your development process (most projects use something similar). Forums were not designed for that purpose.
