Creating a Samba4 BDC then promoting to PDC
« on: September 29, 2015, 05:41:22 PM »
I currently run a Samba4 AD replacement server acting as a PDC (Resara Server) that has worked quite well for 2 years, however it utlizes Samba 4.0.0~alpha8 which is obviously deprecated.   I am trying to figure out a way to construct a BDC to mirror the user accounts and other settings then to promote this BDC to PDC.   I just installed SME Server 9.0 and reviewing this link

http://wiki.contribs.org/Advanced_Samba

I thought there was perhaps a procedure somewhere to activate this server as a BDC.  I understand it highlights that out-of-box it supports workgroup and PDC roles however it seems there is some procedure to activate it as a BDC at least from a stand point of purely experimental and not supported.

If somebody has a suggestion or a link for more info I would appreciate it.

that page is unsupported and quite untested..

IMO you'd find another way to go

in any case, please share here your findings and experiences, thank you

Greg did a huge amount of work on trying to implement a full Samba 4 implementation. Regrettably someone decided to attack a few people personally about some issues (over which they were misinformed and mouthed off with no foundation whatsoever) and it was about all Greg (and several of us) could take.

We all do this voluntarily in our own time, with no small sacrifice to home and families quite frequently, and nature of the abuse directed at us was completely unfounded, unnecessary, and disheartening. As a result of this Greg decided to discontinue his work, which was tragic for SME.

His work is in SME 9 CVS at smeserver-samba

It requires the sernet-samba packages compiled for SME (I did the first ones for Greg and could do them again I guess)

I would love to see it finished off but, as he has advised me, it is probably a months worth of solid work to get the thing about right. And there is no one else around with either the time or the skills to do that right now :-(

Unless you know someone ......

So the lesson is if you want something done, do it yourself, or be frightfully nice to the people working on the distro and try not to p*ss them off too much. Help and constructive criticism are always welcome. Negativity and personal slating is not.

Sorry I can't be more positive. The whole episode upset me a lot and makes my blood boil just thinking about it..... we lost a long time loyal supporter of SME and the opportunity to steal a march on the competition.

And as a follow up we have just noticed someone else has taken Gregs code, reworked it, finished it off and added it to their system. (Greg knows his own code........)

Quite frankly I could scream sometimes

Can't we take advantage of that?  Sorry I'm not the person to do it, but someone might be able to....

And unfortunately I'm not good enough, and I don't know anyone either.

All pretty tragic really.
