SME server as a member server
« on: February 19, 2016, 04:16:45 PM »
there is a SME  server  configured in my network as Server Gateway. The domain name of this server is Mechdesign.loc. this server distributes IP addresses for clients.
How can i install and configure another server as memeber server/client of Mechdesign.loc domain. And how to set ip address of this memeber server/client to be taken from the domain master, Mechdesign.loc.

SME doesn't support this feature.. if you really need another SME inside your lan (and I'd be curious to know why) you have to use a fixed IP and replicate all needed users

I have a special software to run seperately from the server. which is an account package. I want this server sit in the network and provide the space to this special software. Fixed ip is ok then
The configuration is the problem....

the domain controller - os sme server 9.0
                name      - mech
      domain name      - mechdesign.loc
      ip local              - 192.168.125.125

the proposed sme server may be - os sme server 9.0
                                 name    - accountapp
domain name- the memeber of mechdesigh.loc / like accountapp.mechdesign.loc
                           ip address   - 192.168.125.130

i think this is enough information for you to help me

well

do you need the same users on both servers?

anyway:
on "primary server":
- create a reservation for IP .130 with name accountapp.mechdesign.loc

on the "client" server, setup it with name accountapp domain mechdesign.loc, IP .130, DNS 192.168.125.125

to send emails, on the "client" server, use the primary one as smarthost, authenticating with a valid account

P.S.: when you talk of "member server" you likely talking about M$ servers

Thanks for the information.
I installed this server as server only mode. Named the system as "accountapp" and domain name is "mechdesign.loc."
But how to logon as a domain user account that is on the "mech" computer (Sme server Domain controller)?

if you need to authenticate your users on accountapp you'd think about ldap

do you need samba access on accountapp server?

BTW, when somebody asks you for info about what you need, you'd tell all the story :-)

Yes i need samba access. Bcos if we would share documents on this server, we need samba configured to access the documents on this accountapp server.

then, as per my first answer, you have to replicate all users on both servers, keeping them in sync..

yes i understood from the begining.
Ok in this mode, if i change password of a user on domain server, do i have to change the password of the same user on the accountapp computer? or automatically it changes the password?

well.. when you posted there was only one question:

Ok in this mode, if i change password of a user on domain server, do i have to change the password of the same user on the accountapp computer?

and I answered "yes, sure"

you edited your post adding another question..

there's no (easy/available) sync feature between 2 or more SME servers.. each time you create/edit/lock an user on the "main" server, you have to replicate the same on the others.

hope this is clear enough now

Ok. thanks for the help.
I think we should select another distribution of linux. Is this feature available in nethserver? if yes i will continue this forum on Nethserver site.

well..

you aren't telling us what you really need and why you need a separate server..

you'd take a plain centos and join it to SME's domain (see https://wiki.contribs.org/Client_Authentication), so that you have only a domain server..

anyway, even if OT here, I can tell you that neither NS supports such a feature.

again, if you want help, tell us all the whole plot.. because, maybe, you're using the wrong approach to the problem (see http://xyproblem.info/)

Actually this is my prospect.
think about there is a windows 2012 server as active directory domain controller.
and there is a windows 7 workstation which is connected to that domain controller.

Now i want a linux comptuer to act as a workstation like the above example.

Becase the Account package supplier asks us to install their software on a standalone linux workstation. This workstation must be accessible also over the openvpn bridge with domain user accounts.

so, in all of this, I can't find where SME comes out..

SME is not a workstation.. can you clarify, please? because we are horribly OT here

moving to general discussion

Ok thanks. I will try with Centos or ubuntu.

Centos is also a server distribution.  Ubuntu, Fedora or Mint are the possible ones that come to mind.

well.. centos can work as a workstation too, but I tend to agree that Ubuntu/Mint are more desktop oriented and, AFAIK, they both have some AD join features..
