disable roaming profiles: known side effects?
« on: July 28, 2016, 06:07:47 PM »
Hi all

I inherited a virtual SME8 that I promptly migrated to 9.1

this SME is domain controller, there are some physical clients joined to the domain and a virtual Windows 2008 with terminal server.. w2008 is joined to domain too

I noticed that roaming profiles are enabled and this is a problem because users auth on clients with the same credentials they use on terminal server.. so, profiles are shared between the real clients and TS sessions.

I'm not an expert with roaming profiles, so my question is: is there any side effect in disabling them? I mean: once I teach my users to save files only on the server (and not on the desktop or in documents folder), is there anything else I should be aware of?

thank you in advance

Hi Stefano,
I found the best trick is to leave everybody logged on, disable roaming profiles then logoff and log back on again (you will get an error message) but at least the users will keep all their desktop settings etc. If you disable roaming profiles while the users are logged off you will be given a fresh profile. Also I think you will have to find some other method to backup the PST file which is located in "Documents/Outlook Files" (if using Outlook 2010). Other than that I haven't seen any issues.
