why SME SERVER?
« on: May 05, 2017, 12:55:56 AM »
hi,
i'm installing my computers room for my new society, working in systems and networks administration.
here is my configuration:

internet >>>> adslbox >>> firewall+ router + VPN >>>>> 6 computers under linux fedora (not yet completly decided)
i'll probably install a DMZ in 6 months

so i'm seeking for a software running on a dedicated computer for firewall+ router + VPN

why should i use SMEserver  and not Pfsense, IPFire,  Shootwall, Endian or any other software?

best regards

If all you're looking for is firewall/router/VPN, IMO, SME isn't the best choice for that application--and certainly not SME 10, which is still in alpha.  It will work, and VPN support can be added easily enough, but its hardware requirements are higher than pfSense (the only other one of those I have any experience with), and it's rather less flexible with respect to routing.  My SME server sits behind a pfSense router.

if you want to share files between your Fedora station using cifs or samba, host your own emails, webserver, and add some other web applications and services for your LAN then SME 9 could be a choice  to do both.

If you only search for a router and firewall then go for one you cited.
