Extract only users and files from dar
« on: May 31, 2017, 01:29:07 PM »
Hello, I apologize in advance if there is a discussion of this topic. I have an archive (dar files lookat att) that is transferred to the new server 9 in a directory / tmp. So far, the server has served as a server-gateway now I want to be just a server-dedicated(I'll do it only a mail server). And that is precisely why I want to be transferred only
Usernames (with passwords), and all mail messages that are located in /home/e-smith/files/users. Is there an option not to re-enter all users with new passwords. Thanks in advance.

PS The server has no problems updated daily and is doing everyday a workstation backup

Why not just do a normal restore and then reconfigure as server only?

Just login to the admin console (as admin user)  & run Configure this server. Select server only mode. Save & reboot.
All users, mail & data will be preserved/retained.
No need to restore from the archive.
Koozali SME server supports changing modes without data loss.

So far. I have a working 8.2 server that works (its role is Server and gataway) but I want to transfer only users and their files, groups (ibays not use). They are stored in /home/e-smith/files/users. On the new server 9.2 I want to have only an email server.  With this I intend to install 9.2 (the role will be Server Only) and put them there so I do not insert them manually. I dont want to re-create new password. How can I do that?

As has been said by Terry & myself, just do a normal restore, then reconfigure the server to run in Server Only mode. You do this in the admin console, ie login to command prompt as admin user.

If there are other settings that you do not want on the new server (eg ibays, domains & so on), just change or delete them in server manager.
On SME server it is OK to make these sort of changes, as all users & data etc will be retained (other than the changes made).

You cannot easily transfer ONLY users, their passwords & their data, as different pieces of user information are stored in different config & database files (along with other settings & information), so extracting only users is difficult.

There is a contrib that may assist (Lazy Admin Tools or LAT), but I think you will have difficulty using it & I am not sure if it is still supported for SME9.x.

Or search the wiki for 'cloning', you'll find other solutions

Other ideas & methods for creating "limited" backup sets & transferring & restoring them to a new server are here:

I would agree with what's been said here. Only this last weekend I did an upgrade of my server and it worked flawlessly.

I did a backup to USB, the restored on the new server. I went from SME 8.2 to SME 9.2. I reinstalled all of the required contribs and everything was where I left it. In your case then all you would need to do is delete the extra 'stuff' that you're no longer using.

I can't see any reason why you would bother with trying to image a machine when the backup/restore works so well.
