How to stop a modem
« on: September 04, 2002, 11:58:20 AM »
Hi everybody,
I'd like to know if it's possible to close a modem connexion with the 5.5 version ?
For now, i stop the modem with the OFF button but i think there is another solution.
Thanks to help me.
Bastien.

Hi Bastien,

For PPPOE you've got adsl-start and adsl-stop scripts ;
For modem dialup, I used to use ifup-ppp and ifdown-ppp or something like that ; I even asked friends to write me a script for doing so ;

Guess you should look in that direction...
Bye

Yesd, i saw in this direction but it's for a client and he don't know the LINUX commands so i hoped to find another possibility but i don't think so now... :-(
Thanks.
Best regards,
Bastien.

Hi,

If you only want the modem up for part of the day, during working hours! we put a timer switch between the power plug and the modem regulating how long the modem power is turned on.

Yes, it's a solution but the problem is that the modem must be connected only for maintenance and no during working day.
Is there a initialisation string to close the dialup after a inactivity timeout ?
Thanks.

Bastien.

Check into Dialmon. It controls the modem, and can accept commands from remote computers (i.e. bring your home SME's connection up and down from any Windows PC in the house).

Here you go:

http://www.e-smith.org/contrib/rpm-index/RPM-e-smith-dialup-0.1-1.src.html

Once this is installed you have a Dialup panel in your server manager ... you can force the modem up or down as well as do many other useful things.
