Oops.. :-( my bad, modified original post sorry, answer is still the same..sorry again my bad

Go here and install the non default repository hosted by Stephdl  https://wiki.contribs.org/Stephdl

That is what the wiki is telling you, then:

# yum install smeserver-dar2 --enablerepo=stephdl
# signal-event post-upgrade;signal-event reboot

Quote
for sme9
You have to enable the stephdl repository. see bugzilla:8508

click on the stephdl link

Oops is right!

Somewhat shocking really...

I'm a little angry so please allow me a little latitude to vent.

WTF am I supposed to do with all that gobbledygook you pointed me to? If users of SME were Linux whizzes they likely wouldn't be using SME. I halfway know my way around a command line and copied and pasted that mess earlier today at a root command prompt and it didn't result in a working DAR installation. Additionally now I have entered a bunch of commands I have no idea what they did.

Code: [Select]
[root@s11 ~]# db yum_repositories set stephdl repository \
> > BaseURL http://mirror.de-labrusse.fr/smeserver/\$releasever \
> > EnableGroups no GPGCheck yes \
> > Name "Mirror de Labrusse" \
> > GPGKey http://mirror.de-labrusse.fr/RPM-GPG-KEY \
> > Visible yes status disabled
[root@s11 ~]# signal-event yum-modify
[root@s11 ~]# yum install --enablerepo=stephdl smeserver-dar2

Could someone please point me to an DAR2 rpm I can download and install without all this convoluted overhead? That is what I did for years with SME8 and it worked amazingly well.

Since it was erased this is what I'd like to do:
Copy an installable RPM (I have been using smeserver-dar2-0.0.1-27.el4.sme.noarch.rpm) to /root and then install:
Code: [Select]
[root@s11 ~]#yum install /root/smeserver-dar2-0.0.1-27.el4.sme.noarch.rpm server-vmware-server --enablerepo=smedev
[root@s11 ~]#cd /opt/dar2-mc
[root@s11 ~]#./install.sh
[root@s11 ~]#signal-event post-upgrade; signal-event reboot

I'm assuming smeserver-dar2-0.0.3-1.el6.sme.src.rpm  at http://mirror.de-labrusse.fr/smeserver/6/SRPMS/ contains source files and is not an installable RPM. I'm also assuming that smeserver-dar2-0.0.1-27.el4.sme.noarch.rpm that I have been using won't work with SME9.

According to https://wiki.contribs.org/DAR2
DAR2
Skill level: Easy
The instructions on this page can be followed by a beginner.

That would be a good thing...

Gotta have backup! The built in one does not handle enough data, the other solutions look too complex. DAR has worked well for me for a very long time. If there is something better I'd like to know what it is.

Thank you!

I'll give it a whirl when I get back!

I know many of my questions may seem simple to the wonderful people here. Please realize that while a can possibly work at a slightly higher level than an office drone I really like the advanced capabilities that SME server allows me to deploy without having to do a lot of head scratching and research.

I remember seeing E-Smith in a box at the local CompUSA. I had just found the Netwinder and was amazed at the capabilities that it had. A little pricey but compared to a Win server not so much AND it did all sorts of cool stuff! Netwinder went kablooey and I, still liking small form factor and custom hardware, moved onto Cobalt Office Server. Very neat! Could use either the 1U rackmount or the cute box for either the Rac (web server) software or Office Server software. Sun bought that and put them out of business. I still use Blue Onyx for web...

So full circle, after putting a bunch of eggs in those two baskets only to have them smashed I found SME Server and have been using it since v6. On the whole it has been a great experience! The ease of installation, upgrades and the like are first class and easier than anything I have experienced in the commercial world. Support and documentation OTOH can be spotty. When it is good it tends to be really good! Other times there seems to be gaps where a user like myself feels lost in procedures that seem obtuse and written for others that are "in the know". I understand that this is a volunteer effort and I support that. But any effort that looses sight of it's "customer base" will have a hard time flourishing. I'd like to see SME flourish because I still see great utility in traditional LAN type networks. And I don't want to have to find another replacement!

In any case, thanks to TerryF and all those that toil on this effort!

That work well!

On servers that have not had the stephdl repositories installed as I detailed (quite rudely) above. On the server I tried the repository stuff I get this when I try to install a local copy of the RPM:

SME is designed to be simple to install and use out of the box. It provides most things a user will need with no intervention

If you want to start adding other things to SME then you have got to start understanding and learning.

Most items on the wiki are well explained and generally you can copy and paste stuff and it will just work.

If it is too complicated you have 2 choices. Learn and ask polite questions, or don't touch.

So if you don't understand all that gobbledygook then leave well alone or have a read about adding repos.

A slightly less abusive post might have got a more sympathetic response.

As it is, as you probably created the problem playing with things you couldn't be bothered to learn so I suggest you search the forums, and read the wiki, and see if you can figure it out.

I'll give you a clue.

Sernet. CentOS 4. Really ?

My mamma says "if you don't have something to contribute, keep your mouth shut."

I searched, found less than helpful information, posted and was pointed to the less than helpful information, had my post mutilated, then finally got help.

Now I need to know how to undo the less than helpful information.

Others likely need the same thing, not hints and a lecture.

Sorry if I'm abrasive sometimes but I don't think acting like this is a "club" where some insiders know the tricks and others don;t is helpful. SME is hardly a standard distribution and if it is to succeed it need as many users as possible.

wires12, we're trying to give the best support as we can

try to imagine me or somebody else answer your question using your attitude: do you think it will be a good thing?
I don't think so..
Please, be polite and remember that this is a forum, we're all volunteers and are here in our spare time, thank you

My mamma says "if you don't have something to contribute, keep your mouth shut."

If that was directed at me then I suggest you have a think twice about what you really want out of your life. It certainly isn't help.

The information is pretty accurate. PEBKC. Adding a repo doesn't really get a lot simpler. Do you want us to do the copy and paste for you?

...... you made the mess. Perhaps you ought to look at what you did to add Sernet, which has noting to do with the stephdl repo.

Others don't start off cursing and blaming others for their own failings or lack of knowledge. I'm not about to start doing your dirty work when you are abusing me.

Don't apologise. Just don't be abusive. Simples.

It's not a 'club'. We are all volunteers. We were all NOOBS once. And we ALL had to go read and understand. You will help yourself a lot and get more assistance if you could be bothered to do the same.

If you have criticisms then make them politely and fairly, and after you have done some research. As we say frequently... use a TEST machine. Never use a real one until you know what you are doing.

You mention about backup "The built in one does not handle enough data" Where did you get that notion ? What have you done to test before making sweeping assumptions??

If you can start by being polite, explain EXACTLY what you have done, and what you might have tried to remedy the situation, you may get some help.

But if you are going to continue this way then you are going to listen to nothing but the sound of silence.

Why do you have SerNet repo configured.
I suggest you remove it. Commands are in the FAQ link at top of forums

I used the built in backup for years with DDS1 to DDS4 tape drives and it could barely get the job done overnight. And that was 40G max. Not to mention retrieving individual files problematic.

Most of the servers I deal with are around 1T with some close to 2T. If the built in backup can handle that timely and recover individual files then maybe I am the PEBCAK.

Thank you Janet.

The only reason I would have it configured is because I was following instructions found on Contribs.org. I will scroll back through my commands and see if I can implement the fix in the FAQ. If not I'll backup the server, replace the drives, do a fresh install, restore and install DAR2 the way I know it works properly.

Also from the FAQ, you could try

yum clean all --enablerepo=*

and also (assuming the repo might be enabled which is not advisable) you could do

db yum_repositories setprop SerNet status disabled
signal-event yum-modify
