Noobie questions about setting up a new server
« on: November 09, 2017, 01:08:26 PM »
First post here, so treat me gently  :-?

I have an old (6+ years) Centos 5 server that's long overdue an update.
It was initially set up by a colleague who's no longer here, and my initial dabblings with Centos 7 left me more confused than when I started.

So I've fired up SME Server 9.2 onto a test rig, and was very pleased as to how simple and quick it was to get something up and running ... so great job !!

However, I see that 9.2 is EOL in 2020, but 10.0 is only in Alpha.

If I install the new server using 9.2, will there be an update path to 10.0 when it's released ?

Or will I have to re-install 10.0 from scratch ?
If so, can I then backup/restore my config (and/or data) ?

Thanks in advance for any help

Mark J

yes, there will be an upgrade path from your 9.2 server to version 10, but it may well involve backing the 9.2 server data and config up using external USB or a second (Affa) server and then re-installing over the top of the 9.2 system and then restoring the data and config. It should work easily, I have done it many times between versions and never had a problem which was not easily solved.

A point to note.... whether you can do an inplace upgrade or backup/restore is decided by whatever upstream ie Redhat decide.

The need to backup/restore from SME 8-9 was due to decisions taken by Redhat, not SME, and as a result we are bound by their choices.

No problem ... as long as I know there's a (relatively simple) upgrade path when versions go EOL, I'm happy.

Cheers ... I've actually already setup a test system with most of what I want, so I could see the ease of install.
Took me about 4 hours from never using SME Server, so I'm well impressed !!

Just need to build a proper server now and roll it out
