Hi
I've just finished (almost) turning up my first SME Server. I'm not a networking newbie by any means, but this is my first experience with the e-smith package.
All seems well on the LAN side but I am having problems getting DHCP working in the Network side. I've tried two configurations to no avail:
Configuration 1) Cable modem on the Network side. Using a static IP and manually entering the DNS works fine. DHCP using either of the DHCP options is a no-go. My first suspicion was that the cable modem is still expecting the old MAC address. I tried powering the CM down for 10min (which is supposed to flush it's MAC cache), and rebooting it and the SME, but still no-go. I may try next calling my CM ISP and have them release the MAC address, but I don't think that's the problem as evidenced by my configuration 2 experiment below.
BTW: Can the SME clone the old MAC address - I know some routers can do this but I couldn't find any reference to it in the doc.
Configuration 2) Another router (a 3com 3c19504 IS) between the SME and the cable modem. If I configure the SME for a static WAN IP outside the 3com's (LAN side) DHCP range, everything works fine. If I configure the SME for WAN DHCP and expect the 3com to assign it an IP, its no-go. Note that the 3com IS works fine in it's DHCP mode with the cable modem.
Hopefully someone has a clue as to what my problem is, or can at lease lead me out of darkness! I've been at this for three days and am especially frustrated since it seems like so basic a problem.
Thanks
George
