Windows 10 Update via SME 10.0 error
« on: October 03, 2021, 01:35:16 PM »
I have 2 related(?) problems:

I built an SME 10.0 server to replace my 9.2 server which I have been using for some years.
Both servers are Server/Gateway. No Proxy.
My normal workstation uses Windows 10 Pro (ver. 21H1) on the internal LAN.

Problem 1:
After configuration I unplugged the 9.2 server and replaced with the 10.0 server using the same internal and external LAN connections.
Using Windows 10, I connected successfully to the Internet connected to the SME server-manager and successfully installed the available updates.
After the re-boot/re-configure I then needed to check for Windows 10 updates on my workstation.
Windows Update came up with the error 0x80240438.

I disconnected the 10.0 server, fired up the 9.2 server and tried the Windows Update again. This time it worked perfectly!

After checking the possible causes I was left with the suggestion that it could be due to the firewall.
As I have no other firewall other than that in the SME box I suspect that this is where the problem (?) is.

Problem 2:

My printer/scanner is an HP ENVY 4504 WiFi connected to the router on the external network and thus has an IP address within the external LAN.
I have been using both printer and scanner from my workstation, (internal), for a couple of years via my SME 9.2 server
With my new 10.0 server I can print successfully but cannot scan.
Investigations indicate that 2-way communication cannot be established.
Configuration on both Printer/Scanner and workstation have not changed. The only difference is the SME server.

I apologize for placing two problems within one report but I feel that both are connected (Firewall?).
I've searched through the forums but can't find any similar problems.

Thanks for helping.

Alex

Well, Windows....

The interwebs suggest a caching issue.
Probably detected a change with the server/network & threw its toys out of tge pram.

Sounds like you have some double NAT going on?

Can you do a little network map?

What sort of router? Does it have a firewall? How does SME connect?

Why is the printer 'outside' your internal LAN?

Not sure why v9 would have let you scan if you were really connected through it.

We need some more info really.

A search on the Windows 10 error number (0x80240438) finds lots of replies, including videos.
Many seem to point to Windows 10 as the source of the problem:

i would rather search toward squid proxy rather than firewall.
lots of changes in term of squid version and configuration. And updates systems, like video streaming tends to need some tune up usually to see the proxy behave correctly.

Thanks Jean-Philippe, I've never looked at Squid-Proxy and hence have no experience.
I'll study the "How-to" to get an idea, (I noticed that it did mention "Windows Update" so that may be a clue.

I now find that I cannot update my Anti-Virus signatures, (BitDefender), on the W10 box; message says that it cannot find the server. I guess this is a similar problem.

I'm trying to create a map of my network as requested by "ReetP" but I'm not sure that I want to publicly publish it on the forum.

Thanks for your advice,
Alex

As long as the public IP is not show it doesn't really matter. You can obfuscate a stuff a bit. It is really just trying to get an idea of your layout.

Also please answer the other questions I asked earlier.

fiest easy test would be to disable http proxy from server manager.  if it works after that you then can investigate how to update the squid rules

Reply to "ReetP":

Sorry for the delay (couldn't reach Koozali forums from late afternoon until this morning).
Please find attached network map; details on router type, firewall and connection are included.
Please note that my local LAN has no WiFi interface, only Ethernet.

I've checked the links on 0x80240438 error but the only realistic connection seems to me to be with the firewall/proxy.
(Microsoft Troubleshooter is, as I've always found, useless)
I have found that the 0x80240438 problem occurs when checking for updates. When an update was downloaded, (by temporarily replacing the old server) then after connecting the new server and attempting to execute an "install" I get "server not found", (even though I can browse successfully).

I also found that using the new server my anti-virus, (BitDefender), updates fail with a similar error, (server not found).

The  printer is outside my internal LAN because I have to check out other Laptops etc which I don't want to connect to my LAN but I also need to use it myself to print/scan in b/w & colour.
From both old and new servers I can print successfully and can browse to  the printer's web interface (192.168.1.246) but I cannot scan from the new server.

Thanks for your help.

Reply to Jean-Philippe:

Thanks for the suggestion.
I disabled HTTP proxy status  in the security section of the Server Manager.
First thing I tried was to update my Anti-Virus, (important) and success! it updated albeit slowly!
Then I tried a "Check for Updates" in Windows settings. This went through without errors! but there were no updates to download/install so I'll have to wait for the next Microsoft update, (which usually is not too fare away...).

Thanks for your help. I need to have a look at Squid Proxy and try to learn how it works.

Cheers,
Alex
