So a bit of advanced notice of ongoing work.

This was a good contrib but age had caught up with it, particularly PHP which seems to be on a mission to deprecate itself completely very soon

I found a github repo with some more recent v1.2 code which should run with PHP > 7.1 which fixes the mcrypt deprecation issues, and they are are also working on a v2.0

I have imported the core code to smecontribs but both the smeserver-phpldapamin and phpldapadmin need work to convert to using PHP pools and SME update events which I hope Brian will be working on over the next few weeks, but I am hopeful that this great tool will work again.

Please keep a watch on these bugs and help out.

there sre chances indeed that the one from epel ,if any, is outdated and wirks only with php54.
best import last one from git and use whatever php version it needs.

did similar for phpmyadmin from memory.
