Degraded Array on SME 9.2, best way to fix?
« on: December 04, 2021, 10:35:11 PM »
I tried upgrading to 10 but could not see server after restoring data. I did manage to upgrade RAM from 4 to 12 gigs on a HP server and did put in a new drive  Western Digital Gold Enterprise 5 year warranted drive 2 weeks ago as I realized the pair were over 5 years old.

I have an additional drive to put in to replace the raid 1 bad drive. From the mail message received my assumption is the 1st drive md0 is faulty so the system should be shut down, the new md1 drive moved to md0 position and another drive placed in md1 location then after restarting, and seeing if drive data appears in tact,  then say yes to rebuild the array?

I am confirming this as I so seldom need to touch the computer and I am unfortunately away and will have to rely on someone else to do this. Hopefully they did the complete weekend backup so there is a further safety net if this fails.

This is an automatically generated mail message from mdadm
running on fs

A DegradedArray event had been detected on md device /dev/md0.

Faithfully yours, etc.

P.S. The /proc/mdstat file currently contains the following:

Personalities : [raid1]
md0 : active raid1 sda1[0]
      255936 blocks super 1.0 [2/1] [U_]

md1 : active raid1 sda2[0]
      1953126208 blocks super 1.1 [2/1] [U_]
      bitmap: 4/15 pages [16KB], 65536KB chunk

unused devices: <none>

Thanks,
Ken

https://wiki.koozali.org/Raid

Thanks, I managed to use Putty to log in remotely and see that it states
"All RAID devices are in clean state"

So now I am thinking whether I should have the 3rd drive put in as a hot spare. I assume that means it would be spinning the entire time so not sure if that is a good idea or not. Western Digital has something called P.U.I.S. https://www.techopedia.com/definition/27698/power-up-in-standby-puis but I don't suppose this is how the standby drive works.

Thanks,
Ken

Can you show

cat /proc/mdstat

from your v10 server?

The output from your original post shows just a single drive, not a mirror. You need to check that first.

A hot spare means it is running & synced the whole time. It can't be 'off' or in standby to be 'hot'

So you may as well make it a 3 drive mirror and use it for a bit more read speed... Or leave cold on the shelf.

4. I have a job, wife, and kids and do this in my spare time. If you want something fixed, please help.

It is still at 9.2, as a full restore of settings was causing me to loose the ability to see it on the network. I have since upgraded the RAM to 12 Gigabytes from 4, but next attempt may just manually input settings and restore Ibays only.

It does sound more logical to make a 3 drive mirror if that is possible as compared to a hot spare. I attached a jpg of it showing as synchronized.

Thanks, Ken

It is still at 9.2,

In which case the only advice to ask for is regarding v10 or migration as v9 is not supported.

Your network settings need to be reconfigured on upgraded to v10 as the network port names will probably change.

Please go back to your original thread and fix the problem.

There are several ways to migrate listed elsewhere here and detailed in the wiki.

Thanks, alas as seen from original thread, installing 10 worked but as soon as I restored the dar backup I had made at the server then the settings would not allow other computers to see it. I tried about 2 or 3 weekends in a row and ran out of time before this trip to Mexico setting up for retirement, at least in the last 2 days it did get an upgrade of RAM to 12 from 4 and a new hard disk of the 2. I will be back in Canada circa May 2022. If a restore does not work with the 12 gigs of RAM then I will settle for reentering emails and restoring Ibays instead of restoring settings from backup which for whatever reason creates a Network issue where workstations can not see the server yet could with the basic 10 install.

Thanks.

Sounds like you need to get back and fix your server sooner rather than later. It looks like you've lost a drive from your array which needs fixing immediately which will not be easy remotely.

Ram is not really going to help you upgrade your server. As per my last post on your previous thread, steady, organised and methodical will.

Leaving things to the last minute and then rushing leaves you in trouble. You now have a server that is out of support, and a long way away.

There are threads and wiki pages you can read here on how to fix Raid, but I doubt many are going to try and help you talk someone else through doing this.
