Topic: Upgrading Server to SME 10 using AMD processor

Installing SME 10 on server with AMD Ryzen 5600G processor gives a kernel panic and stops. Notice is "AMD processor -hardware not undergone upstream system testing."  When buying the hardware I checked the RedHat 7 certified compatibility list and AMD Ryzen "Threadripper" Pro processor was listed. The sales clerk said the AMD 5600g is a threadripper CPU. So I thought I was OK. Other than going back and trying to buy the "Threadripper" by specific name is there a work around? Thanks.

Yeah, I get it.  I just need a plain Jane SME gateway server for SME 10.  Any suggestions on the exact equipment to buy? I need it low cost and a lot of items are not available due to the sluggish economy. Thanks.

Look for a secondhand server from a recycler or ebay.

There's truck loads so hard to advise - a lot will depend on budget & real world usage.

Check HP ML towers or DL racks, and similar from Dell. Usually all RH compatible.

I suggest you really spend some time reading up on hardware - there is plenty of info on CPUs, RAM, HDDs, Raid cards etc. so you really understand what you need, and can spot a good deal.

I still run a ebay DL380G7 at home. Truck loads of RAM when bought & slapped a pile of new drives in. Runs Proxmox, SME in a vm plus other vms too.

You will find cheaper, but you get what you pay for. Less flexibility, upgradeability, power etc.

Another solution, if you wish or have to keep your 5600G, could consist in using the latest kernels from elrepo. I had to do it for a few years because my Apollo Lake CPU wasn't supported by CENTOS 7 default kernel.

I don't remember precisely how I did this, but from the few notes I have, I started with https://elrepo.org/tiki/tiki-index.php and https://elrepo.org/tiki/kernel-ml. You'll have to update grub, in order to select the elrepo kernel, and to watch carefully the packages configuration and updates.

I can't garantee it's perfectly secure, but in three years of use, I had no problem.

Thanks for all the advice. I might have done " lc_lol" 's solution but was in a very big hurry to get a server up so I did what I should have done in the first place: Browse RHEL certified list until I found a pre-built compatible computer that was available on the market.  I originally posted this because I know there is hardware out there that is not on the list that works. Yes, lots of other stuff does work, but with no guarantees. That list means you can install and it will work - well, 99.999999999% of the time.
