my nerves!! - HELP please
« on: April 23, 2000, 08:33:28 PM »
Hi people !

It seems that i am too stupid for that stuff  :-((
I downloaded e-smith.4.0b3-cdrom.iso - file and e-smith-4.03-diskette.iso files.
I bought a CD-burner (Plextor, IDE).
I have an old computer (AMD K PR 133, PCI slots, 6,4 GB IBM HD, two network Controllers - one for my cable-modem, another for my LAN) to install e-smith.
I tried to make a bootable CD-ROM with the recommended floppydisc.
I destroyed about 4 CD-R's.
My nerves are on the end.......
I have two burn-programs: NERO 4.0 trial and WinOnCD 3.6.
dears, would anyone be so kind and tell me, step by step, what to do (for stupids like me) to get a bootable CD-ROM?
I am a completeley newbie in these things (like burning CD-R and work with ISO, RAW, IMG files and so on.
Would be very nice of yuo.
1000 thanks and regards

Bruno

A much cheaper way, and one that helps fund e-smith development is simply to purchase the media...$40.00 is not much compared to what a cd burner costs.

Yes, I know, you already have the hardware, and version 4.x isn't released for sale...and these comments really aren't of much help to you at this point...

But, to other prospective e-smith users, I encourage them to buy the media...that is, after all, part of what pays for this site and product improvement.

I've got version 3.0 now and I'll probably order 4.x shortly after the official release. E-smith is simply too inexpensive to warrant the hassle of downloading and cd burning.

(Unless you are somebody like Charlie Brady, who appears to have forgotten more about computers than I will ever know.)

Well, i would. But I live in Austria, Europe. I didn't find a distributor. I have no VISA - Card to order online and delivery time is too long for me. It must be possible to burn it.

tnx

Personally I have never used either of those burning programs.
There should be a option to write a cd from an iso... don't even
bother trying to make it bootable.  The copying software in Nero
should allow you to use an ISO as your source.

There should also be a program on the disk called rawrite.exe that
when run from DOS will walk you through making a boot disk from the
.img file you downloaded.  The .img file should also be on the cd....
A better utility for writing the boot disk is rawwinwrite... just a hint....

...And there is a newer beta...

You need to burn the cd image to disk, by writing an iso to the disk. Read the help files that come with winoncd to find out how to exactly do this.

As for making the bootable diskette to install off, you need to mount the cdrom, in windows this just is putting it in the drive, then using the program rawrite.exe and the file named boot.img in the /images dir, write that file to the floppy diskette. IIRC rawrite for dos prompts you as you go.
