Max number of rcpts per message in qmail
« on: June 22, 2023, 10:46:57 PM »
I have a user getting error messages, when she tries to send emails to many recipients in one message. Is there a way to adjust this? I have searched and found patches for qmail (https://notes.sagredo.eu/en/qmail-notes-185/patching-qmail-82.html#maxrcpt). Some also just adding a maxrcpts file in /var/qmail/control, but this seems to have no effect.

What is the default value for maxrcpts? Is there some way to change it?

That patch is to reduce, not increase, the number of emails to help reduce spam.

By default I'm not sure there really is a limit beyond physical capacity.

1.What errors do you get?

2. Why do you need to send that many? Use a group? Or use a proper newsletter/marketing mailing system like phplist.

I use phplist for newsletters and can send a lot in one go but usually rate limit it to reduce the chance of getting blocked as a spammer by remote hosts - which may be your users issue.

A lot of big providers will block you if you send too much too fast. Lets see the errors.

1. Read the Manual
2. Read the Wiki
3. Don't ask for support on Unsupported versions of software
4. I have a job, wife, and kids and do this in my spare time. If you want something fixed, please help.

mailing list will usually send emails individually.

her I assume (because not explicit in OP) that the user is sending using a software client.  Hence the message is mot recieved by qmail but sqpsmtpd most probably or maybe qpsmtpd depending on settings. so probably barking at wrong tree.

knowing which client, could also help.

how many recipient does she tries? was she able to see a limit where it works?

Thunderbird used to have an extension to act as a mailing list server and send the same message to a list of rcpt individually i. place of thousand of cc or cci.
