What's happening at Koozali - Nov 2023
« on: November 12, 2023, 02:17:33 PM »
Thought I would post a few brief notes on current happenings. Time flies so fast!!

Build systems
=========

Trevor and Brian have been wrestling with Gitea, Koji and mock to develop a new build system. Every time they seem to have cracked it, another Koji horror appears. We really want a new build system for development of Koozali 11/12 as it will make life much easier for us but we know time is getting short.

We hope this will finally be working shortly.

Koozali 11/12
=========

This has been on the back burner for some while. We have been watching the machinations of the various RHEL derivatives. It is a shark infested pond right now! We still believe Rocky is the way ahead, but we keep a watching brief.

We expect development work to really kick off over Xmas and into the New Year. This is your opportunity to help - we will need lots of testing. Remember, this is open source. It is not OUR sole responsibility to build this. It is a COLLECTIVE responsibility. If you are a user/administrator it is as much YOUR problem as it is ours.

If you don't know how to help, then read, or ask us questions. Those who help are much more likely to get some friendly assistance than those who do not.

We hope to start using the new server manager in SME Koozali 11. To start with it looks very similar to the existing manager, but underneath it is completely different.

The best thing is you can build your own themes for it! Have a look here on how to install it on a TEST server and have a play. Feedback is most welcome! If you have have some web design experience we'd LOVE to have your input and assistance on the theme/html/css side of things.

General development
=============

We have all been pretty busy with work, holidays and families etc.

We have been fixing bugs as they are found and releasing packages. PHP support has had updates and we will keep on top of that. There are some questions over the future of MariaDB and we are watching that.

RHEL finally released a fix for the Windows samba issue. We couldn't possibly comment on why there was such a long delay.....

To see where we need help, have a look at the Dashboard. Setup a clean test machine (most of us use Proxmox with virtualised servers today - that really helps development with features like snapshots), preferably with some basic sample data. Pick a bug and try and repeat it, or verify it is fixed. It isn't difficult, and you will learn a lot about your server! Ask us if you need help.

As per my previous post here we updated the email authentication system to deprecate cvm-unix which was causing issues we could not resolve.

https://forums.koozali.org/index.php/topic,55027.0.html

That has caused a few surprises as per posts here, mainly as it is now logging lots of failed login attempts, but seems to be working well. Let us know if you have any issues.

How many devs are there here?
====================

I did ask last time how many developers are actively writing code for Koozali but no one responded.

The answer is around 5. There may be a few more that will help with Koozali 11 once we start to build it.

We have another handful who help test, verify etc.

We still have several thousand servers out there. The administrator to developer ratio is huge and we need all the help we can get!!

So don't wait for someone else to build things for you. Come and help.

Future
====

We will keep you posted on further developments and when the first Koozali SME v11 Alpha lands. Do try and get involved!

I will try and organise a webinar - I have had a tumultuous 6 months at work and just not had time to organise this but will after I get back from my trip to NZ at the beginning of December.

I actually have some free time over the Christmas period this year so that may be a good time. I will advise ASAP.

Many thanks,

The Koozali Dev Team

1. Read the Manual
2. Read the Wiki
3. Don't ask for support on Unsupported versions of software
4. I have a job, wife, and kids and do this in my spare time. If you want something fixed, please help.
