Question about SME backups
« on: April 11, 2026, 02:20:54 AM »
I'm curious on the default SME backups as to why some options seem to be missing. For instance I was just working on transferring data from an SME10 test server to an SME11 test server that I recently set up. The server manager / smanager has a backup to desktop option but no restore from desktop option. Is there some reason for that? Also there is a configure workstation backup and a restore from workstation option but no perform workstation backup which I would use perform an immediate backup without waiting for the configured backup time when I need to transfer a server from one computer to another.

Is there a way to perform an immediate workstation backup using the workstation configuration that is already defined?

I managed to do the SME10 to 11 data transfer I needed for the test server using a USB drive and the admin terminal windows on the two computers but it would have been easier if I could have just performed an immediate workstation backup from the SME10 computer and restored that to the new SME11 setup I am trying out.

Backup to desktop has never had a restore option from the SM edit: was removed after sme7.4

Workstation backup is designed to operate as set in SM, you can force a backup to begin from the cli, see the wiki  https://wiki.koozali.org/Backup_with_dar#How_to_start_a_one-off_backup

Failsafe :_) backup from a console to a removeable device, on install of NEW server option is offered to restore from a backup, easy peasy  OR  is in use now by developers and has been tuned for the sme10-sme11 route

Thanks for the info. It is exactly what I was looking for. While the USB disk worked fine for transferring a test server the NAS workstation option would be needed to transfer a full server worth of files. It would be kind of nice if the command line method had a verbose option like the DAR2 contribution so you could track the progress of the backup but I guess you can figure that once you are returned to the command prompt after issuing the backup command then it is finished.

Backup/restore is one of things on the agenda for a complete overhaul, some may trickle into sme11 down the track but definitely sme12 bound
