Topic: Roundcube: unable to view mail

Howdy,
SME11-RC1(as of latest updates), been in use for over a year.
I have not been using Roundcube since initial setup of this server. However, I started using it lately to check if my scheduled backups  were running properly(which they are).
Logging into Roundcube goes as expected, interface looks ok, I can move between folders and settings etc..
The issue is when I actually click on an email to read it, I get this error in the bottom panel:

Oops... something went wrong!

An internal error has occurred. Your request cannot be processed at this time.

For administrators: Please check the application and/or server error logs for more information.

If however, I click on Reply to that same email, the quouted text will be visible.
Screenshots are attached to help make the description clearer.

After peeking in the php/roundcube/error.log the line below shows up:

[06-Jul-2026 13:02:26 America/New_York] PHP Fatal error:  Uncaught Error: Class "Sabre\VObject\Property\Text" not found in /usr/share/roundcubemail/plugins/libcalendaring/lib/libcalendaring_vcalendar.php:1577

Not sure how the calendar would affect this?

so how did you end up with that? doesn't seem to be an out of the box setup, not sure you should be even doing this

Well thats an excellent question.

This is mostly stock SME11, main addon is Nextcloud.
Uhh..it was installed during beta and is still rc. Not complaining just pointing it out.
I checked those links, only the first third one makes some sense. But the link seems to suggest that if one wants Roundcube to act as an CalDav server that a kolab* plugin/addon would be needed. Maybe that error is a red herring, why would I need a calendar plugin to view an email?

should put me in the same boat??

It wont explain why those config props are there, however.

ok, removing those 2 config settings did the trick.
The calendar and libcalendaring were the culprits. My concern is how those configs got there to begin with??
Was this a side effect of the Nextcloud contrib? If anyone else is running NC could you share some info, please?

Ok Terry,

so I did some investigating also. On my SME which is about a year old, the date stamp on the roundcubemail plugins:
March 2025 - calendar
May 2025 - libcalendaring

The roundcubemail/plugins folder has folders dated from April 2025 up to July 2026.
Plugins with more recent dates show being modified, I would assume from regular updates.

Not sure if any of this helps honestly, I felt a need to look a little closer at what might have created the issue on my server.

Roundcube mail does not have a calendar plugin as installed

I'll have a look at an old alpha or beta VM but was always a Rouncube thing for me no calendar, or is it a Nextcloud addin that is doing it?

i strongly discourage going in the way of adding any calendar plugin for roundcube.  they all are buggy. 


the only one almost usable is the one needing nextcloud and nextcloud calendar installed. If you go far enough in this direction then you are better using roundcube plugin for nextcloud than doing the other way !
