Connecting to VPN w/Win 9.x machines
« on: September 27, 2002, 04:19:35 AM »
I am a new user and am having trouble connecting Windows 98 machines with a VPN connection.  Windows 2000 machines connect just fine.  I have tried to configure them the same.  The only difference (that I can see) is the OS.

Can anyone tell me if there is a difference in the way I should configure a Win 98 machine as opposed to a Win 2000 Machine?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you,

You need 128 bit encryption patch for win98, or else you have to change the encryption settings from 128 to 40 bit (W98 compatible).

You can find the patch at M$ website : search for dun 1.4.

I'm having the same problem...I can connect no problem from Win2K, WinXP, and even Mac OS X clients, but the Win98SE machines connect, verify the username, log on to the network, and then the connection is immediately terminated.

This is Win98SE with DUN 1.4.

The one thing I can think of is that the SME server doesn't serve DHCP to the network I'm trying to connect to -- that is taken care of by a LinkSys router. I've tried setting the IP to a static one in the TCP/IP settings, but it still has the same results. And of course, the other clients all work with IPs from the server.

Any suggestions would be helpful, including log files to look at on the SME server side.
