slow smtp response on public IP

Hi,

I hope someone can point me in the right direction here!

I have migrated my domain name millfarm.net to Zoneedit.com and set up my dns the way that I want.

I have an a record for mail.millfarm.net which is my SME 5.5 and have set up an MX record that points to mail.millfarm.net.

My web site and ftp all work fine, and mail.millfarm.net responds to pings but when I telnet into the box on port 25 it takes ages to respond. This means that other servers sending me email give up and try the backup MX that I've paid for.

Currently I've configured the SME to do an ETRN against the backup mail server, but this is not what I want.

My box is largely standard apart from DansGuardian (from Dungog), Twiggi and Junkfilter (from Darrell May) and a few other non mail/filtering things (MP3 jukebox, login script, update panel etc. etc.)

In an attempt to fix this I made the changes recommended here http://www.e-smith.org/bboard//read.php?f=1&i=18671&t=18671 to enable Ident Masquerading.

It's still slow to respond. It does respond eventually, and then is really slow to respond to input. If I attach on the internal IP it zips along as expected.

Any help, gratefully received!

David.
