Cannot send outside domain
« on: April 26, 2000, 01:44:37 PM »
Hi,

I've installed e-smith v3.01 but have a problem with the setup of the server
to send and receive mail outside our internal network. Internally it works fine.
I have read the manual, but am still not able to get it right. When I send outside
our internal network, (I use outlook express 5) the message get send, but never reaches the recipient. I've also tried to send from outside(with yahoo mail) to the server but my message never arrived. Here is the setup I've got:

2 Network cards (Intel Pro/100+ PCI Adapter)
Internal network IP range 152.X.X.X
External network IP range 196.X.X.X  (dedicated to our ISP via a proxy server)

Server setup
------------
Operation mode          Server-only - dedicated
Local IP                    152.X.X.X
Local Subnet             255.255.255.0
DHCP server              Off

Gateway IP address    196.X.X.X (I've used the gateway IP on our proxy server,
and NOT the IP of the proxy server. However,
I've also tried the IP of the proxy server.)

Please help me to configure the server in order to send and receive mail
outside our internal network.
Any help would be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

Thank you.

Christo,
We are having the same problem. I have tried every possible mail setting on e-smith 4.0b. I am using MS Outlook on my win98 workstation. For some unknown reason email is not leaving e-smith, nor coming into e-smith from my ISP.
This is like the last leg of my journey.
I have used RedHat Linux's for 18 momths. So far this is the simplest
server install encountered.

HEY YOU GUYS! HELP!!!!!!

You haven't given us any specific clues about your configuration to help us track down your problem. Regarding outgoing mail, do you have any problems with your internet connection? Are there any messages queued on your e-smith system? Log in and run the command "/var/qmail/bin/qmail-qread" to check. Look through the log files in /var/log/qmail to view the reasons for non-delivery if there are messages.

How have you configured your server for incoming mail? Do you have correctly configured DNS set up for your domain? Is your ISP receiving your email for you? We will need the answers to that sort of question to track down your exact problem.

Best wishes

The e-smith server and gateway in server-only mode only has one active network card. You will need to be able to reach the internet via the gateway IP address for the server to be able to send internet email, unless you use the SMTPSmartHost feature, and relay all outgoing mail via another server.

I don't understand your network configuration as I don't know the configuration and features of the proxy server. The e-smith server and gateway was not designed to work in such a configuration. It was designed to have a direct connection to your ISP via the external interface. If you cannot operate it in that configuration, then you will need to work out exactly what is going wrong with your setup. Is there a routing problem? Is there a name resolution problem? Is the proxy server blocking incoming and/or outgoing connections?

Best wishes

Hi,

A colleague of mine changed the setup to "Server and gateway - dedicated".
All is going well. Thanks a lot to everyone who replied.
